GdS: Possession, prudence and Leao – Fonseca’s plan to bridge the gap with Inter

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan are set to appoint Paulo Fonseca as their new coach and his main job will be to ensure that the Rossoneri close the 19-point gap that now exists between them and Inter.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, there are three main weapons that Fonseca will use as Milan coach to ensure there is a title challenge next season: Prudence, possession and Rafael Leao.

Some fans may feel that signing someone who couldn’t succeed at AS Roma does not represent progress, but Fonseca has shown a different side of his coaching in the last year with Lille.

He has stopped his teams from conceding so many goals, with Lille’s record dropping from 44 to 34, with the goals scored dropping from 65 to 52.

As well as that, Milan will hope to have a lot more possession of the ball than they have done recently with Stefano Pioli. Lille have been second in Ligue 1 for passes completed and sixth for passes into the final third.

Finally, any new coach at Milan has no choice but to get the best out of Leao, who struggled this season. The Portuguese winger can be the best player in Serie A under the right guidance and Fonseca will not succeed if Leao is operating at half-speed again.

    1. For me, should look at Ethan Ampadu – one of each of his club’s best players for the last few seasons, Serie A experience, international experience… absolute bargain for Leeds at 8m last year, but they need to raise funds this summer.

The English Championship should be a great place to recruit players – look at how Gyokeres broke out once leaving Coventry.

    1. I absolutely loved it when Pioli’s Milan would stop right before the opponent’s penalty box and keep passing the ball sideways and backwards. Possession. Lovely.

I’d rather have the opponent have the ball 80% of the time if we’d have clear ideas on HOW to break their defense when we get the ball to the last 1/4.

  1. I don’t know why, but I just feel indifferent about Fonseca. If we think our management is being stupid for hiring a manager that seems to be below Pioli’s standards, then what can we even say about Bayern Munich?

As far as I’m concerned, when things go south next season, management has a lot more to lose than us fans.
