GdS: Pulisic in career-best form after another ‘checkmate’ move vs. Frosinone

By Oliver Fisher -

Christian Pulisic appears to be back to his best form again having netted five goals in Serie A since his arrival in the summer transfer window from Chelsea.

La Gazzetta dello Sport liken Pulisic’s goal against Frosinone on Saturday night to a chess move, given how he took control with a move across the board (penalty area) before unleashing his checkmate with a shot into the top corner past Turati.

Pulisic has been playing chess all his life, so the comparison fits. He has never started a league season so well in his career and what was striking about the goal was that he collected a pass that was over 60 metres from Mike Maignan with a beautiful first touch, and the ball remained glued to his feet as he navigated into space before following.

Pulisic is taking over Milan game by game and the stats show that when he scores, Stefano Pioli never loses. So far he has netted against Bologna, Turin, Lazio, Genoa and Frosinone: five wins out of five, with three goals at home and two away.

The spark in the Champions League is missing, but he has never had such a prolific start. Not even in his time at Borussia Dortmund, when he was spoken of as a gem for the future. In the 2016-17 season, he had two goals and three assists in the first six games before disappearing until the beginning of March.

It was the same script in the following season: a couple of goals in the first five outings and then nothing more until December. The year in which he scored the most remains 2019-20, nine goals in 25 games in his first season in London, only to then enter a cycle of injuries and bad form.

Milan regenerated him. In addition to the five goals in Serie A, there are also three goals scored with the USA national team against Uzbekistan, Germany and Ghana. Total: 8 goals and 2 assists in 21 matches across his games with the Rossoneri and the USA since the summer.

After a negative season at Chelsea with one goal in 30 appearances, of which only ten came as a starter, he is showing the Blues what they are perhaps missing out on.
