GdS: ‘Operation No.9’ – RB Leipzig talent tops Milan’s summer wish list

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan know that they must invest in a new striker this summer ahead of the 2024-25 season, and a new name is reportedly at the top of their wish list: Benjamin Sesko.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (as seen below) reports that Sesko is a great candidate to become Milan’s No.1 target for the summer because he ticks all the boxes that the club are looking for.

The priority is to find a young striker who can lead the line for years, given Olivier Giroud is 37 while he and Luka Jovic have deals that expire in June, not to mention that the MLS is a temptation for the Frenchman.

The Rossoneri therefore want a player who has the potential to grow further (Sesko is 20), who is physical and ready to assert himself in the area and could become a guaranteed goal scorer for them.

For Giorgio Furlani and Geoffrey Moncada, the man who makes decisions from a transfer point of view, it will be the most complicated choice because while mistakes are allowed when it comes to signing depth players, they cannot miss with this signing.

Sesko moved from Salzburg to Leipzig for over €20m – staying in the Red Bull circle – but in Germany he is playing less than expected. In the league he has four starts and three goals, while in the Champions League he has two starts and two goals.

RB Leipzig have quality up front – Openda, Xavi Simons, Poulsen, Dani Olmo – and getting game time is not a given. However, his characteristics remain: Sesko is technical, he knows how to accelerate but he is coordinated.

How much would he cost? It’s difficult to say but those who estimate €40m aren’t far off. The comparisons with Erling Haaland, of course, are excessive because Sesko scores much less.

Another interesting note: his agent was at Casa Milan in the summer of 2022 to talk to Paolo Maldini. Sesko was admired then but that time the negotiation didn’t take off because the idea was for him to take the step to Leipzig.

    1. 💯
This is the guy for us, would prefer him to the other targets mentioned snd I believe he is at Vlahivic level now and in due course will be better the LMartinez.

  1. Go get Openda!

It’s still frustrating that Moncada and co focused so singularly on CDK in 2022 when Openda was sold for 7.5m by Brugge the same summer. He since signed for Leipzig the following year for 38m and is worth even more now.
He is exactly the profile we need!
    Poor scouting

      1. Do you think Maldini who was busy running the club, attending training and matches etc watches the Belgian league closely? No
It is the scouting department that do that and then recommend players to management. Of course M&M have the final say. Did the scouting department recommend Openda?

        1. Not sure what you trying to imply. Moncada taking the whole summer of 2022 to just scout and recommend one CDK to M&M cos he is so “singularly focused” like you said? Or M&M taking the whole summer to close the CDK deal? I remember the latter more. Did our scouts propose Openda? We can’t really know all the players whom Moncada had or had not scouted and proposed, can we? Perhaps, and more likely the case, Maldini was not looking at any other CF recommendations because he was already happy with Origi in 2022.

          1. I did say Moncada and co and I agree M&M spent too long on that closure.
That summer was a mess from the start, primarily due to the takeover (which amazingly took exactly as long as the transfer window to complete) with M&M in limbo until end of June, which really put the mercato on the back foot.

The Origi idea was a very foolish move, whatever minds decided that was a good idea

    1. I don’t think the negotiation had very little to do with Moncada. He scouts and recommends. Not only that, he (and his team) probably scouts dozens of players. CDK was probably scouted throughout 2021-22. The decision to go for him and the time it took to make it happens lies with others.

  2. 40M. right.. they are fooling themselves.. Šeško is highly rated and locked down until 20208. He’d go for around 60M.

Numero uno target should be Pavlidis. Schick as 2nd option. And Dovbyk as 3rd

    1. Schick is an interesting choice, defiantly has the X factor, with the right coach and club he could be in Europe’s top 10 strikers

      1. With the raise of Boniface at Leverkusen he will be looking for a new club to get more game time imao. And yup. If he is fit he’s pretty good. Probably the best option for a budget striker. Also knows serie a
