GdS: The referee and VAR failed to award a penalty to Milan in Empoli draw

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan only managed a 0-0 draw against Empoli last night and thus failed to build on their 4-0 win against Napoli. And the Rossoneri didn’t exactly get any help from the referee either, as he missed a penalty.

In the 54th minute of the game, Theo Hernandez was brought down inside the box (since it was on the line) but the referee Mercenaro only awarded a corner to Milan. He believed the defender got a touch on the ball and VAR confirmed his decision.

However, as stated by Gazzetta Dello Sport (via SempreMilan), the defender did not get a touch on the ball as the referee thought. Hernandez clearly got to the ball first and VAR made a mistake by not intervening.

As said, it all occurred on the line of the penalty box which also means that it was inside the box as per the rules. Regardless of the penalty, though, Milan didn’t create enough chances to take home the three points.

    1. Well… He is correct. Milan didn’t create enough chances to be able to score with that attacking quartet. Obviously the amount of chances would have been enough for Leao, Giroud, Diaz etc., but we’re now talking about Rebic, Saelemaekers, Bennacer and most of all ORIGI. Origi needs closer to 20 excellent sitters to be able to hit the net (or even the ball).

So yeah. Milan didn’t create enough chances to score with the players on the pitch.

      1. Rebic & origi truly flop. No wonder every subtitute pioli do with them have no impact to game. We need sell both of them on summer. No need to give them chance again , but im doubt any club are stupid to buy both of them

  1. Once again VAR fails Milan although I agree Milan shouldn’t count on a penalty that was clear as day and the fact it wasn’t awarded while the other were is more proof of the incompetence seen throughout this league. If Italians truly want calcio back then the FIGC needs a complete overhaul from top to bottom.

  2. Rebic is on his way out because he has been lacking composure. The chance he missed in the first half MUST be converted. Smashing that pass straight into the keeper is inexcusable.
The fact the ref missed the pk in live action, isn’t great, but understandable. BUT WHY DO WE HAVE VAR IF IT DOESN’T EVEN GET REVIEWED??????????? Idiots.

  3. This as well as the penalty that was called off. There wasn’t a clear angle showing the ball DIDN’T touch the player’s hand so the call should have stood. At a particular angle it still looked handball and from the front on view it’s even moreso the case. You have to have clear evidence to overturn the call on field It’s just a farce all over tbh
