GdS: The referee and VAR failed to award a penalty to Milan in Empoli draw

AC Milan only managed a 0-0 draw against Empoli last night and thus failed to build on their 4-0 win against Napoli. And the Rossoneri didn’t exactly get any help from the referee either, as he missed a penalty.

In the 54th minute of the game, Theo Hernandez was brought down inside the box (since it was on the line) but the referee Mercenaro only awarded a corner to Milan. He believed the defender got a touch on the ball and VAR confirmed his decision.

However, as stated by Gazzetta Dello Sport (via SempreMilan), the defender did not get a touch on the ball as the referee thought. Hernandez clearly got to the ball first and VAR made a mistake by not intervening.

As said, it all occurred on the line of the penalty box which also means that it was inside the box as per the rules. Regardless of the penalty, though, Milan didn’t create enough chances to take home the three points.
