Mike Maignan used to be a proper leader for AC Milan, oozing confidence week in and week out. However, as highlighted by Gazzetta dello Sport this morning, it hasn’t exactly been the case this season.
The pink newspaper, following another howler by the goalkeeper, spoke about the situation in today’s edition (see photo below). ‘Mike Maignan is no longer Mike Maignan’, the opening sentence reads, stating that this is becoming more and more evident.

Now the goalkeeper makes mistakes and fails to inspire confidence. Since putting on the captain’s armband, paradoxically, he has stopped being a leader for the team. What happened in Turin is a great example, botting the ball straight at Malick Thiaw rather than clearing it for a throw-in, or even waiting for the ball to come into the box.
These things happen, of course, but the mistakes are adding up for Maignan: on Zortea’s shot in Milan-Cagliari, in Turin on Weah, in Como on Diao, at home against Napoli, on Paixao’s shot in Rotterdam. He has lost his great quality: confidence.
Milan and Maignan are talking about a renewal and there is a basic agreement, as the newspaper continues, at around €5m per season. At this point the question is legitimate: is this what he and Milan need?

Toriano needs to be given a couple of games now
I appreciate you’re opinion but I think we can do that some other time, but not now.
We’re in a dire situation.
Sell. Been calling for his sale for 2 years.
There are plenty of Goalkeepers that will do the job just from serie A, for half of the salary.
Starting with Vasquez from Empoli who is a Milan player and one of the best rated GKers in the league.
Suzuki from Parma.
Caprile from Cagliari.
Sava from Udinese.
Easiest position to replace, especially in Italy.
As I said couple month ago.
One season without UCL is chance for RedBird to overturn transfer policy.
Remove all flops, frequently injured and expensive players, and bring more quality players. Players that can fight in Serie A.
There is a huge list of players that can be sold. Not just Okafor. Bennacer was mistake. He is more experienced one now… but Red Bird logic..
That’s very sensible the gameplan you’ve outlined but I just don’t trust THIS management to do the right thing
I believe in rallying behind our players and team even in the lowest points. I think Maignan needs the support of the team and fans especially with media pieces like this. However, I cannot ignore the facts that he has missed several match days in the last 3 seasons and now is going through one of his biggest dips in form. For 3 seasons now, Milan has not been able to rely on him consistently for a full season. Will this change in the seasons to come? Management clearly view this dip in form as a short term issue, but we need to hope he rallies back and become Magic Mike again
What renewal? For Maignan, Theo and Leao the cycle is over. Cash in and thank you for these years. Move on.
They should unless they can bring quality replacement back to the team
And I don’t think this management can bring quality players
None of them will extend with no UCL anyway.
Its tough for keepers to wear the armband and Mike is no exception. He will improve without it for sure
Unfortunately, he has too many mistakes. Not only this season. It can be a bit harsh since goalkeepers mistakes are usually goals, some other positions can get away with it. But that is how it is. They should hold on the renewal until summer, if PSG really wants to offer a good sum for him I’d sell him. I mean Tatarusanu looked more solid than Maignan this season.
Hahahaha! Tata better than Mike this season?? Pass what your smoking kid!!! INSANE
Milan captain armband is curse now.
#captain montolivo go for free.
#captain romagnoli go for free.
#captain calabria. Kick out from milan for 2 million.
#captain theo. Becoming drama queen with water drama and pinalty drama.
#captain maignan. Becoming a loser.
It also crossed my mind.
Some fans around here do not know anything in football apart from “Sell” Once a player has some bad moments, the next this is ,Sell ! The players we have now are good except view ones. The problem is management. The current managers and d owner we have at the relms of affairs have no savvy. They created all this mess.
It’s shocking and quite frankly sad to see so many fans scream sell sell sell our star players after a few bad spells.
Shameful
No you don’t sell Mike
NOW. You never sell when their value may be down kids. You resign him to a reasonable fee (5M – yes donkeys that is reasonable for a keeper of his caliber and track record) – then if you need to sell down the road you can do so calmly when the price is right and you have a suitable replacement. Mike is one of the top 5 keepers in the world and you don’t sell such players at a discount because they may be going through a tough few months. Same applies to Theo.
Unless a crazy offer comes in that we simply cannot refuse – you resign and keep both players
Too many emotional kids on here that scream to sell our best players but will give passes to trash players like: Chukuweze Musah Terracciano, Jovic, Tammy, etc…who have quite frankly offered little to nothing at all. Embarrassing. Wake up. This isn’t FIFA manager.
And do you really think if we sell Mike Leao and Theo we will replace them with suitable talent and spend all that $$$??? LOLOLOLOLO. Ya keep dreaming kiddos
It’s insanity in here these days. Too many ppl calling for sales. Selling Theo Leao and/or even Mike will only further destabilize the team more than it already is. I’d say if anything, don’t sell anyone so the team can finally breathe and learn to play with each other. Another set of players simply mean starting the whole thing over again.
