GdS: Romagnoli back with a bang – his future remains uncertain and his comments confirm it

By Oliver Fisher -

Alessio Romagnoli returned to the starting XI and helped keep a clean sheet against Benevento on Saturday, but his future is seemingly uncertain.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport, Romagnoli drew the criticisms of a large section of fans for his performances in 2021 while Fikayo Tomori – who arrived on loan from Chelsea in January – was put on a pedestal and consecrated as the new Nesta.

Things changed with the return of the captain against Benevento after both Kjaer and Tomori failed to keep Lazio at bay on Monday night. Romagnoli certainly did not have extreme difficulty, but he had a good approach and plenty of concentration.

Now it will be very interesting to understand what will happen in the next and last four games of the season, because right now Alessio, Tomori and Kjaer have more or less the same standing, with a huge game against Juventus on the horizon.

Romagnoli spoke after the match and said: “I would always like to play, then the coach makes the choices. As long as I’m here, I’m ready to give my all. The important thing is that those who play give their soul. If my future depends on Champions League? I have another year on my contract, these are questions for the managers and not for me.”

Romagnoli earns €3.5m net per season, Raiola asks for at least €5m and therefore either an agreement is found in some way, or Milan will have to look for a buyer for Alessio this summer. So as not to lose him for free in 2022. His words – “as long as I’m here” – smacks of uncertainty.

  1. A 3-4-2-1 formation against Juventus won’t be a bad idea.
    Romanogli, Kjaer and Tomori
    Calabria, Hernandez, Kessie and Tonali
    Hakan, Salaemakers
    Ibra.
Hernandez can run all he likes, Calabria can overlap too.

    1. They aren’t really experienced with that structure. Players have to get used to the 3-5-2 system before it can be implemented otherwise they would have no clue.

Any smart coach chooses to puruse diff formations early in the season so that players get used to it. I don’t really think it’d be wise

    2. FIFA and Football Manager says that you can do it without reprocussions and ignoring reality…therefore we should try a completely new system in one of the most important games of the season (sarc)
