AC Milan have begun negotiations over the extension of Mike Maignan’s contract but the initial request is a little surprising, a report claims.
This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) writes how the Milan management always had it on their agenda to begin discussions with Maignan and his entourage over a renewal once the summer transfer window closed.
His current contract expires in 2026 so there is plenty of time, but there is a desire to be proactive when it comes to renewals as seen with the Theo Hernandez, Ismael Bennacer and Rafael Leao extensions.
The initial request of the French goalkeeper’s agents is between €8-10m net per season. This is in line with what the best goalkeepers in the world earn, but it would make him by far the biggest earner in the squad.
Maignan is now part of this elite circle and therefore the request for salary was always likely to be quite a big one. Added to this is Mike’s desire to win, because he wants to play in a highly competitive team and lift trophies.
The negotiations have just begun and are likely to be particularly lengthy. Contacts between the Milan directors and Maignan’s agents will continue in the coming weeks, in the hope of reaching an agreement as soon as possible.
The job that awaits Giorgio Furlani, Geoffrey Moncada and Antonio D’Ottavio is anything but simple, in fact it will be a good test because keeping Maignan would not only mean keeping one of the best goalkeepers in the world in the team, but also an undisputed leader of the dressing room.
HERE WE GO
Just recently there was an article here saying Milan will offer 4M to show how much he is worth to the team. I was laughing at that. Being offered the same as Ruben Loftus Cheek or a bit more than what Krunic is offered is showing how much you’re worth to the team as one of the best GKs on the planet.
Take it or leave it ?
Loftus is on 4m while Krunic is about 1.5. That’s a big difference
But yea at least 5m. He’s one of the best and most important players in the team.
Or sell him like I was saying earlier in the summer
I see the door opening here for a sale. There is no ways Milan will pay that salary. And if his recent statement about PSG is anything to go by, it might just be his strategy to run the contract down or be sold. But as we have seen in recent times every player has a price…let’s hope he will fund our next mercato with a nice windfall, although I want him to stay.
There is way through bonuses. If Mike wants to stay he get 4,5 million net plus around 2 million in bonuses. That’s around what he should earn because he’s entourage request must be 8 to 10, so they find them in the middle. That’s 6 6,5 mill.
Of course if he wants to leave, next summer is his.
But Milan can’t get 100 million for him, but probably in region 40 million at least to up to 60 or 65 million. Which is huge capital gain 😉
After Kessie Romagnoli Hakan era ends, we must stay positive for every of each our best players from back than on.
You think PSG can afford to pay 2 GKs over 10m/yr while losing over 300m on Mbappe?
Do the math
The fact i respect and like mike so much,6m to 7m is okay,he’s a leader, and he should be the great example to young ones, everything is not about money.
As for the agent,we know they all are the same, they pretend as if they are serving the interent of their clients but their own pocket, they are the problem of european football, late raiola make all this mess porpular, hope uefa and fifa do somthing fast before they kill european football, many agents are even encouraging their young clients to move to saudi arabia, some wise players will quickly reject the idea,i understang old players like ronaldo, benzema and others, they have already left a mark in europe.
Lol, better to just sell him in the summer and use the time they’d waste on “negotiations” scouting a replacement.
I hope Milan can find a way to offer him 6M€ and hopefully that would be enough. Hard to see that happening though and maybe Moncada should start looking the for the next GK already.
The main leader here is Davide Calabria who is ever ready to take anything from Milan to renew his contract without any renewal saga or much renewal talks that will attract the media.
But what does he get after being loyal to his beloved AC Milan? Insults upon Insults, upon Insults from a lot of morons and fools here.
Take it or leave it, Calabria is the only one in that team who truly love Milan with all his heart.
No player deserves to be loyal to this fans or take peanuts to satisfy u all because after that it’s still gonna be Insults.
The true was said
He is not the Theo, kalulu, tomori level player, he is playing only because he is Milanist and comes from the youth team, italian etc.,
Otherwise i can’t see him in Milan team if he is à foreign player.
Krunic is much loyal yo play at Milan being paid inly 1m per year but never say no to play at any place in midfield or attack, do the job reasonably good almost every time
I wonder if he would make the same request if Maldini wasn’t sacked considering he is one of the players who publicly questioned it. 🤔
No need to open that discussion again right?
He is gone, deal with it. No need any ‘what if’ let’s just support current team and management.
He is one of the player who has some sort of loyalty to Maldini judging by his instagram post. I don’t know the English term, but I think it is what is called “jual mahal” in Indonesian. He still want to wait and see what will happen after his assurance (Maldini) was removed hence why he inflated the salary demand.
Would be nice to bring Vicario back to Italy if Mike is sold.
The issue here is that he is arguably the best gk in the world right now. His demands based on this are reasonable. So we either pay, or sell. We wont pay that so he is off next summer probably or the next. Btw we would get more than 40m for him, id estimate around 65m to75m.
Mike Maignan will most likely be sold unless the player wants to stay at Milan. I don’t see us giving him more than 6-7m.
Anything more than that would be ridiculous. I don’t believe that with Moncada we would find it difficult to replace him.
It’s the nature of the sport and I’m ok with it as long as we reinvest the funds into strengthening the team rather than losing him for free.
Even if we have to give him what he wants just so we can renew his contract and then sell him.
“It’s the nature of the sport and I’m ok with it as long as we reinvest the funds into strengthening the team rather than losing him for free.”
Yep. After so many missed opportunities / failed operations I doubt Milan would let MM16 walk away for free. Which is fine. We can’t (nor should) force anyone to stay. But we should get a “reasonable reward” for letting the player leave though.
Yep. His contract expires in 2026, so 2024 will be the last chance to get max value if he were to be sold. And if it comes down to a sale, so be it. We’ll get at least 60m. Good enough to fund a replacement and a good reinforcement somewhere else (striker anyone?).
Also of note: Theo’s contract expires in 2026 as well. So the summer of 2024 will also be pivotal for him.
Would be easy to get him renewed. Like he just snubbed Chelsea, PSG and City to renew his contract with us last year.
It’s not that straight forward. That was last year, before Maldini was fired (apparently this is important to him), before 100m was offered for him. At 8-10m per years, he asking to be one of the highest paid GKs in the world. Mike is great, but he’s also a late bloomer and will turn 29 this season. How many years does he have left at this level at this point? If we can renew at 5-6m, then I say go for it, but if he refuses that then I think we have no choice but to sell.
Ohh, I think there is a misunderstanding here. I was talking about Theo not Maignan.
Theo is even more attached to Maldini than Maignan. We need success this season to convince them that this is a winning project so we won’t need Maldini to convince them.
Talking for real, if Mike went out, who do you think will fit his shoes after? I’m talking about a not so much known player as it was Mike that can assure good quality below the goalie
Giorgi Mamardashvili?
Yessss him. He would cost around 20-25M.
Noah Raveyre will replace him soon lmao
I like Mike, but he become to be slow, and masive, he is not so fast like 2 years ago. Also I noticed many times he has no reaction and just watch after the ball instead to try to do something.
He started with 0,6 mil , now he wants 8-10 mil ? He is Dollaruma 2 ?
Maybe you look like an expert to judge goal keepers
Unlike other young players Magic Mike is at his peak age, whatever salary he gets next will be the biggest salary in his life. Expressing 8 to10m salary is not a bad thing from his side.
After it depends on the negotiater in Milan how much he will convince Mike and his agent explaining the project etc., and bonuses depending on scudetto, champions league etc.,
If we just want to cash in for the next window without spending money from the owner, he will be scape goat
He is taking 2.5m which is much lower to his strengths
If his own demands is 8-10 mil and he wont budge on such demands he will surely be sold next summer.
Time to cash in and reinvest the money.
Maignan is the best GKer in the world currently and based on how much other GKer that are on his level are getting paid, he deserves the money he is asking, just not from Milan.
There is no way Milan should make Maignan by far the highest paid player on the team.
1st he is a GK, nowhere near the most important position on the team, and 2nd, he is an injury prone GK. One of the reasons why he is way too injured even though he is a GK, is because he likes to play as an outfield player during training sessions based on France NT videos.
Tell his agents to bring the highest offer, take the money and strengthen the squad. Anything over 80 mil will do it.
Inter sold Onana for 60 mil, bought Somer for 6 and there yet to give up a goal. The rest of the money they used to buy Pavard.
If you hear the GK’s name way too much on a team, it means that your defense is not good, and Milan with Maignan sale money can buy another GK and build a strong defense.
All big matches will be won by goal keepers.
Its not bad, if Milan sell Mike but don’t say that goal keepers are not important rôle in the team.
The worth of Mike maignan goals saved in last 16,quarter finals of champions league is 20m +20m=40m
Without à best goal keeper, no team can won cups
You don’t remember maybe because we haven’t won a champions for long time
Mike completely deserves 8-10mil as he is Top3-4 in the world in his positition. Will Milan pay that much? Not likely. I do hope that Mike believes in this project and that they will come to an agreement here as he is a foundational piece of this project and his leadership is VITAL in the locker room.
If we do have to sell then I hope it’s 100mil+ and Moncada’s scouting comes through for the next Maignan. The club better not be held hostage again by the likes of Donnarumma…
FORZA MILAN ⚫️🔴
Before anyone claim how mich he deserves or should ask for. Go do research. Top goalies get that salary easily. Don’t pay it, he is out. They offered him 4 million. Lost to Torino without him, couldn’t beat Bologna. They are out their minds. You guys blame players leaving for nothing. The club prefers keeping them until their contracts expire at shit wages then to extend them. They know fans will blame the players, not them for being cheap.
Well well well…I wonder if all those Leao haters who said don’t pay him 7M as it is way too much for an Italian club feel the same way about Mike who is asking for 8-10M??? LOL. Surely if 7M was too much for us 8-10M is even more so no???? 😂😂😂😂😂
It’s simple. As I said with Leao I will say the same with Mike. The market dictates price. He should be paid as one of the highest players in Italy (same as Leao) because he is that good and one of the top (if not the top) goalkeeper in the world. Pay the man his money.
Big test for Redbird to see if we can lock him up at a price he is content with. Fingers crossed.
Obviously, he wants to be in the top earners at the club, he deserves that. A footballer’s earning window is relatively short and being 29, he wants to make sure he is maximising his earning potential. If 6-6.5 is not enough, then we need to be scouting GKs at the earliest opportunity, because Sportiello doesn’t fill me with a lot of confidence.
