This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) writes how the Milan management always had it on their agenda to begin discussions with Maignan and his entourage over a renewal once the summer transfer window closed.

His current contract expires in 2026 so there is plenty of time, but there is a desire to be proactive when it comes to renewals as seen with the Theo Hernandez, Ismael Bennacer and Rafael Leao extensions.

The initial request of the French goalkeeper’s agents is between €8-10m net per season. This is in line with what the best goalkeepers in the world earn, but it would make him by far the biggest earner in the squad.

Maignan is now part of this elite circle and therefore the request for salary was always likely to be quite a big one. Added to this is Mike’s desire to win, because he wants to play in a highly competitive team and lift trophies.

The negotiations have just begun and are likely to be particularly lengthy. Contacts between the Milan directors and Maignan’s agents will continue in the coming weeks, in the hope of reaching an agreement as soon as possible.

The job that awaits Giorgio Furlani, Geoffrey Moncada and Antonio D’Ottavio is anything but simple, in fact it will be a good test because keeping Maignan would not only mean keeping one of the best goalkeepers in the world in the team, but also an undisputed leader of the dressing room.
