GdS: From Terim to Tabarez – Milan’s strange history with coaches outside Italy

By Ben Dixon -

AC Milan have had several foreign managers across their history, but their successes normally come with domestic managers. Paulo Fonseca will aim to change the trend, but his start suggests the trend may continue.

As Gazzetta dello Sport writes, the football giants who took the club to its highest points were purely made in Italy. However, there are some interesting cases from abroad, which must be remembered.

Firstly, starting with the ‘Lord’. Herbert Kilpin, the founder of Milan, player, captain, manager, coach, and Lord. The club stems from his idea and the success he brought in the early days, but the times that followed were not as successful.

Heinrich Oppenheim, Herbert Burgess, Engelbert Konig, Jozsef Banas, Jozsef Violak, and Giuseppe Viola, before the first professional coach William Garbutt. Professional or not, their stories ended the same, with zero titles.

Following the war, Lajos Czeizler brought enthusiasm to the club and brought the first tricolour. Mario Sperone replaced him and only lasted a year. Then, Bela Guttmann took the reigns, and whilst he was well-liked, he only lasted 19 games.

Hector Puricelli then was put in charge, and the Rossoneri continued to win. Fast forward to Nils Liedholm, the last manager to win a Scudetto from overseas. He only won one title, but that is more than can be said for some of his peers.

Whilst Oscar Tabarez never won a title, he is remembered fondly for being a ‘successful loser’, a man with a ‘good footballing culture’, Clarence Seedorf, Leonardo and Sinisa Mihajlovic also fall into this bracket. The ‘Maestro’ unfortunately could not bring results, even if he was admired by those around the club.

In 2001, the case of Fatih Terim, memorable for all of the wrong reasons. He lasted 10 games, and he was replaced by Don Carlo.

Questions are already being asked of Fonseca, and his name will go alongside those who have come before him. Whether his time will be remembered fondly remains to be seen, but he must improve, or his fate will await him soon.

  1. I don’t think the nationality of a coach matters much. What matters most is quality.
For every foreign coach that flopped at Milan you can name 2 Italian that flopped as well.
    How about that?

  2. This article maybe propaganda and will force Fonseca out and replace with pioli again or even allegri. No one’s know but this is the Milan fact on their history. Ancelotti came to Milan with no quality and play like limbo. But, he has the quality. Example like pirlo who force to go o deeplying midfielder. And now, Fonseca has the quality ??
