GdS: ‘The feeling is that it will happen’ – Milan and Newcastle discuss €40m deal

By Ben Dixon -

In recent weeks, Newcastle United have been looking at AC Milan’s defensive unit for reinforcements, and now, a deal could be on the cards for one of the players they have been interested in.

With Milan looking to invest in their defence, it is understandable why other clubs have taken an interest in some of the players on the Rossoneri’s books. However, for Newcastle, their first attempt was not successful.

Originally, the Magpies attempted to make a move for Fikayo Tomori, and they have not been the only club to try this. However, both attempts were rebuffed, given Paulo Fonseca is looking to build his defence around the Englishman.

Nevertheless, Newcastle came back around, this time with a different target in mind – Malick Thiaw, and a deal has become seemingly more likely in recent days.

Today, though, Gazzetta dello Sport write that there ‘is a feeling that it will happen’ considering the Magpies are ‘ready’ for their ‘final assault’. It comes partnered with the news that the Diavolo are in the closing stages of a deal for Strahinja Pavlovic, so the German defender could be overshadowed with his arrival.

Whether this will open the door for another central defensive arrival remains to be seen, but given how much the Rossoneri struggled with depth last season, they may browse their options.

  1. All these Italian newspapers like spreading rumours, But Milan should realise that Thiaw is a young and capable player, who will develop into a very very good defender gradually, and with his nature, he is the best option of who will compliment Pavlovic, or use both him Gabbia and Pavlovic in a back 3.
And honestly it will show to the fans and the whole world our weakness if we have to sell him to Fund other buys, were is the money we get going to, and any team that wants to be at the top should not be dismantling itself every season, are we now Newcastle’s supermarket…?

  2. In all my years watching football I don’t think I’ve ever seen a defender try and hack down a player outside the box, miss, and then hack him down inside the box giving away a penalty… Let’s get that Tomori Pavlovic pairing going and let Newcastle blow 40 mil.

    1. You have no guarantee that Pavlovic will be better then Thiaw, I would be happy if Pav joins but it remains to be seen on the pitch what player he is.I think he is being overhyped to Stam status, which he clearly is not( he might develop to that level in the future).
Thiaw had a bad season with injuries and a shambles of a defensive set-up around him but Newcastle see his ceiling is very high or they wouldn’t pay 40m for him. They would go for Pav if he is as good as he is being hyped here , andfor half the price!

      1. Newcastle is just throwing money around looking on whom it will stick. They’ve no clear vision or ambition. Their coach is Howe ffs, need I say more?

          1. They’re not prudent and they got screwed by Milan with tonali..

That oil money will always make them a target for investigations. They’re using money they did not earn and ffp will bite them in the end

        1. Newcastle who signed 4 players for the first team squad last season compared to our 10?

And they’re the ones without focus?

          1. Aha and the season before? And the one before that?

Also we needed to sign many players. The management foked up in the profiles of the players but we definitely needed 2 CM/DM, 2 wingers, 2 ST, 1 Lb. That’s 7 players we NEEDED! Depth baby. I know you’ve no idea how important depth is. You’d just play primavera players for depth, fúck em if they flop

    2. He has made some shocking mistakes that if he had been a youth player he’d probably have never played again.

But we have Kalulu, Gabbia and Tomori and we don’t need to be wasting time or money looking at CBs when we have a massive gaping hole in our midfield.

We need to focus on a DM.

      1. “But we have Kalulu, Gabbia and Tomori” – I can’t understand how that makes a viable, sensible argument in your head considering the last two years…

    3. Exactly. Thiaw can singlehandedly wreck the game for his own team with bizarre decision making and has done it several times at Milan. Physically he has what you want but mentally I just can’t trust him.
God bless Newcastle. Why they would ever want to do business with us again after the Tonali fleecing is beyond me but I’ll gladly take their money.

      1. Thiaw has room for growth, can benefit from good DM’s in front of him and a defensive system that works.

Having said that, if NUFC offers anywhere close to 40mil, you take it and run. And bring another higher caliber CB in.

  3. Learn to overprice your players when selling.
Thiaw had a bad season and was injured for a long time but he is young and been a German international player.

€40 is too cheap. Say double or more and scare them. They have serious money and we need it.

  4. I think €40m is a fair price, but to invest that money in Emerson is an extremely bitter pill to swallow.

Invested in Rios or Fofana, would be great business

  5. It’s good for us but how can any team go and bid 40m for thiaw? What has he done? Hes had a handful of good games but last year was a total disaster when he did play, not to mention he was always injured. If we can somehow get 40m for him that’s like we stole those funds, take it and run

  6. I would take this deal.
Not saying he’s not good , but If I had to choose one from Gabbia, Kalulu, Thiaw, Tomori to sell, it would be Thiaw.

  7. I hope newcastle will treat furlani the same way he does with other teams. If furlani wants €40 million for thiaw, newcastle should offer €10 million. I would love to see furlani’s designer stubble shake at such an offer!!!!! Easy for people to do to you what you do to others!!!!
