Genoa goalkeeper Josep Martinez has claimed that AC Milan’s Mike Maignan is the goalkeeper that has impressed him the most in Serie A this season.
Speaking during an interview with Secolo XIX (via All Milan), the 19998-born Spaniard was asked about which goalkeeper impresses him the most and he chose Milan’s Frenchman.
“The goalkeeper who impressed me the most is Maignan,” Martinez said.
Martinez was in the other goal during the now-famous Genoa-Milan clash earlier in the season, when Maignan was sent off and had to be replaced in goal by Olivier Giroud.
On the performance of the striker when he had to go into goal, Martinez pointed out the courage that was shown to take on the responsibility, as well as the similarities between goalkeepers and strikers.
“He had courage but he doesn’t have the style of a goalkeeper. Certainly, in that outing he had a lot of courage. On the other hand, attackers are the most similar to us goalkeepers: they are used to putting their head, feet and body into trying to hit the ball and score goals,” he said.
Milan are going to be without Giroud for the next match against Fiorentina after he was sent off against Lecce before the international break.
Maignan is expected to be in goal though as he is the clear first choice for the Rossoneri.
