Genoa star Gudmundsson praises ‘strong’ Milan and singles out midfielder for praise

By Oliver Fisher -

Genoa star Albert Gudmundsson has praised AC Milan and he picked out one player in particular as being someone that has impressed him after arriving last summer.

Gudmundsson has been one of the revelations the season in Serie A having scored 14 goals in 35 games for Genoa, who closed their season last night with an impressive 2-0 home victory over Bologna, who have just qualified for the Champions League.

The numbers that the Icelandic international has put up have seen him linked with a summer move to a number of clubs, and Milan are one of them given that there is already a family link. His great-grandfather – also called Albert – played for the Rossoneri many decades ago.

Gudmundsson was interviewed by Sportweek and he was asked about the matches played against Milan, Inter, Juventus and the calls of Gian Piero Gasperini. His comments were relayed by Radio Rossonera.

What was it like facing Inter?

“They have proven that they are the best, they know how to do everything well. They have a system that works. I was very impressed by Calhanoglu: he sets, defends, passes the ball strong and precise short and long, shoots…”

And Milan?

“Strong, they move all over the pitch and I like how they control the game. I like Reijnders, someone else who can do a bit of everything in midfield.”

Juventus?

“Very ‘Italian’, compact. We drew twice with them, a great pride for a team like ours.”

Where do you seen your future?

“As a child I dreamed of reaching the Premier League, but since playing here I’ve changed my mind a bit, because I like being in Italy so much.

“The Premier League would mean a new experience, in football and in life, after having lived and played in Holland and Italy. Serie A has matured me, and I feel that he can still give me a lot in this sense, because you play difficult football, which is both tactical and physical, but which however makes you a complete player from every point of view.”

Your great-grandfather [Albert Guðmundsson] played for Arsenal. Would moving there be the closing of the circle?

“For that matter, my great-grandfather also played for Milan, but that doesn’t mean I’m a Milan or Arsenal fan. His story, however, remains a good story, yes.”

  1. I yesterday read in danish news that he has an abuse case hanging over his head in Iceland and that there seem to be some credible evidence against him. In fact the case was just reopened so investing a great deal of cash on him seems currently unstustainable as his future isnt clear as things stands.

National team player in sex case

Icelander Albert Gudmundsson faces sexual assault charges after Iceland’s attorney general overturns previous conviction

Icelandic Albert Gudmundsson is to be accused of sexual assault.

The charge comes after Iceland’s attorney general overturned the district attorney’s decision made back in February.

      – The witness’s explanation is extremely credible, says Eva Bryndis Helgadottir, who is the lawyer for the woman who was supposed to be the victim in the case.

      – This is of course in line with what my client has said from the very beginning. So it is no surprise that she is now believed. The case must go through the court system now.

      – An indictment has not been created, published and confirmed yet, and it is impossible to say how long the case will last, the lawyer tells Visir. However, she believes that Gudmundsson will probably be charged with sexual assault.

Albert Gudmundsson is currently playing for Genoa, and he has previously been part of the Icelandic national team.

However, he has been on break from the Icelandic national team during the entire course of the case, which started last summer – except for the playoff games for the EC in March this year.

Here Gudmundsson was back, but Iceland failed to qualify.

Gudmundsson has also not been selected for the upcoming test matches for the Icelandic national team, and the lawyer is happy about that.

      – This is justified, taking into account her (the victim’s) credibility, and justified on the basis that the case is about to end with a verdict, Eva Bryndis Helgadottir tells Ruv.

Whether its true might obviously be a different matter but i doubt many clubs would come calling for him currently.

        1. 😀 to be fair kluivert was under allegations and to my knowledge robinho is currently serving a nine year sentence for his actions in milano while he played for us but sure if it is correct then inter can buy him as much as they might want to.

    1. Indeed but if he actually has done it then its also difficult to feel sorry for him but he has nevertheless been great for genoa this season.

  2. Since im Icelandic and follow Icelandic media I can say this. There is a lot to gain from accusing a player especially of his caliber. There is alot of exposure for her unknown lawyer as well. The lawyer seems to use every opportunity. It will get you followers on social media and skyrocket your exposure, especially as the court battle goes international on the media
So people should have that in mind

    1. Well that applies to everywhere and im from denmark and i assume that iceland is a society of equal legal society as denmark is and the fact that the case has been reopened would seem like a worrying sign to me.
Time will tell though and im not trying to orchestrate a witch hunt here but just brought the news of the story.
