The time has come to speed up: AC Milan and Manchester United are working to finalise Rasmus Hojlund’s move back to Italy.
La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) write this morning that United have been open about the terms of the loan with an option to buy for a week now, but the two clubs now need to agree on the price of the buy-out.

Milan started with a total valuation of around €40m, while the English club were even going as high as €50m. Both sides, however, know they’ll have to make concessions for the deal to be successful, reaching a middle ground of around €5m for the loan and just under €40m for the option.
The two teams agree on one thing: it’s time for Hojlund to move on. United already made this clear to the Dane, first by not playing him in the friendly against Fiorentina, and then by making it clear in a face-to-face meeting with the player himself.
If that weren’t enough, keep an eye on Ruben Amorim’s selections for Sunday’s league opener at Old Trafford against Arsenal. In England, they’re confident that Rasmus is clearly behind Sesko, Cunha, Zirkzee, and Mbeumo in the Portuguese manager’s pecking order.
Where the deal stands
Milan, for their part, contacted Hojlund’s representatives (and his father, Andres) on Tuesday evening to confirm their desire to bring him to San Siro, receiving the forward’s clear approval.
The Dane values the Milanese club for its tradition and is attracted by the opportunity to work with Massimiliano Allegri, but clearly wants guarantees regarding the Rossoneri’s project around him. Not so much financially (Milan will cover his €4m per year salary), but rather on the purely playing side.
In this sense, Hojlund would like reassurances regarding the possibility of a permanent move in a year’s time, should his experience in Milan prove successful. Either with an obligation set upon achieving objectives or with a figure that leaves Milan leeway to exercise this right.
Igli Tare wants a striker in before the league opener next Saturday at San Siro against Cremonese. The hope is still to fulfil this promise to Allegri, but negotiations for Hojlund don’t appear to be nearing completion, which is why Milan is forced to keep potential alternatives alive to avoid surprises.
Yesterday, the English media reported Fulham’s interest in the Dane, but Borussia Dortmund are also keeping an eye on things. Until the deal is finalised, Hojlund remains coveted by other teams.

That is what loan with option to buy for. If he turn out to be not good enough as starter then he can at least serve as backup for a year, if he turn out to be good, the option can be used.
5+35M should really be the maximum. I still think we need another mid and CB… maybe more a CB. Another mid if we sell Musah, Bennacer and Adli.

Højlund is NOT a bad player, pretty f***ing fra from.
He is fast, technically strong, works and shoots hard, has an element of pocher to him and is an good header. He is in other words an excellent addition to Gimenez.
Højlund has supported Man U since his childhood, forgive him it is hard to give up on his dream club.
Very well said. People are to quick to judge his stance. As Romano reported, he is not rejecting the idea of joining Milan, but rather of leaving United (the club he supports). Compare this to Yacine Adli. He loves Milan and would do everything to continue playing for the club. However, that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t give everything for a new club. These guys are professionals and should be trusted to move past such issues. Especially Hojlund has never showed signs of a lack of professionalism.
Personality wise, I have no issues. He prefers to stay at Man Utd, fair. As you say, total professional.
Player-wise, is he the right fit? Let’s be blunt here, on results alone he’s not an elite CF. He has a lower goal-contributions-to-minutes ratio than Morata and below what people here would have looked for with an incoming forward. Last year, he hardly scored at all.
There’s clearly some talent and good physical characteristics there. So we have to hope that our scouts have done the research properly into his ability to start turning in stronger performances more reliably in another context.
Because the bigger question is value. For Milan, spending 40M on a player is a huge investment, one we can ill afford to go wrong. If he was coming in for 20M then I don’t think there’d be as much noise, but for huge money and coming from an underperforming team with poor baseline stats…
He’s got a lot of good characteristics and experience in dealing with big clubs chasing Europe. He seems to be determined and a reasonable team player. Can he turn that into the player he has the potential to be? Hopefully, but until he does the jury will be out on him.
If it’s a loan with an option then personally I think that’s good business. Even if the option is high but we probably have a chance to revisit it later, because Man Utd will be onto the next shiny thing by next summer. And we’ve seen several players from Man Utd leave and flourish elsewhere. The issue is that Hojlund has never really ‘flourished’ anywhere, so it’s a gamble if we’re expecting him to do it with us. Especially when we don’t have the best track record for bringing out the best of players!
Three CBs we are linked with according to Milannews… Caleb Okoli, Berat Djimsiti (more experience), and Ryan Flamingo (younger).
Djimsiti is an interesting idea. Going for the Kjaer copy there. I almost think we should go for him over the others.

Lucumi sounds like a great option but we aren’t doing anything… 17-18M for a guy in his final season is fair, even more after they jerked us around with Pobega
I haven’t read anything about us being linked to Lucumi. And I think we still need to trim down the squad size before signing another CB.
CB is for me already a big question mark, but if we do it would be insane not to push for the Colombian… final year is a big advantage, when the player isn’t as greedy as a particular Serb…
ST now is the main target, and for the clear-out Benny and Adli are the only ones left, while I also think keeping Okafor over Chukwueze makes more sense, since he can be both winger in 4-3-3 and SS in 3-5-2.

Alexander Sorloth has been mentioned as an alternative to Hojlund. Obviously older and more experienced, off a double digit season with Atletico.

Good signing when it happens. He ticks alot of boxes ie young, fast, technical, serie A experience. He failed to make impact at a big club but at 22 he can recover. Manu style didn’t suit him. At Milan he will be better suited. Worse case if he fails he goes back.

A loan to Milan might as well be a salvation ticket for Hojlund.
This a good deal. Hojland will be determined to prove he is a top striker and Milan’s investment is a reasonable one all things considered. The key to his success will also be dependent on the service he gets from Milan’s key players like Leao, Modric and Pulisic. If these 3 have great form Hojland should score goals.
