“A complicated year” – Gimenez reflects on injury ordeal and admits to wanting Mexico return

Santiago Gimenez has once again shed a bit of light on his recovery from injury and his hopes for the next few months.

It hasn’t been the campaign that Gimenez hoped for. He has only scored one goal in the Coppa Italia, and above all, a very long lay-off due to an ankle injury that worsened in late October and required surgery.

The former Feyenoord star returned to the squad against Torino before the final break and will now look to get firing in this final stretch, still unsure of what the future holds amid talk of a potential sale.

Santi got half an hour at the Maradona in place of Niclas Füllkrug and he spent the entire match against Udinese watching from the bench. It felt like a tactical decision from Massimiliano Allegri, who expects another No.9 to arrive this summer.

‘A complicated year’

Gimenez has given an exclusive interview to RECORD Mexico in which he discussed a number of topics, with MilanNews relaying what he had to say.

How has this season been?

“It’s been quite a complicated year because I started the season with high expectations, starting the first 10 games while the team was in first place. I had high expectations and was very hungry to achieve my seasonal goals, then the injury came…”

You spent a long time out…

“Nobody likes getting injured. The bad news about the surgery and everything else has arrived, but I’ve always said: I try not to look to the past, I always try to look to the present to build the future.

“I think the present is that I’m already recovered from the surgery, I’m fine: I’m training again and clearly I’m still working to be 100% and bring joy to people.”

Will you return to Mexico in the future?

“It’s a deep desire I have and one that will surely come true in many years, I hope, because I enjoy being in Europe and competing at the highest level, but I would love to return to Cruz Azul. It’s a team that marked an era.

“That Cruz Azul of 2020, 2021, 2022, I think, was a team that set a record for points, that won the Copa, the Supercopa, the Liga MX, and I was lucky enough to be part of that squad: it was something beautiful, wonderful. Clearly, I would like to return one day.”
