Il Giorno: UNESCO World Heritage bid could disrupt Milan’s San Donato plan – the details

By Oliver Fisher -

There may be a further obstacle for AC Milan to overcome in pursuit of a new stadium in San Donato and it involves a potential UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As Il Giorno (via PianetaMilan) reports, the idea of proposing the village of Chiaravalle as a UNESCO site dates back to ten years ago, when the project for the new Milan stadium was not yet in sight. However, to date, no one has made concrete progress towards making it official.

With the stadium project becoming more serious, naturally a step forward has been taken in the UNESCO bid, which could put the Rossoneri’s plans to build a new stadium in San Donato in further difficulty.

In fact, the boundaries of the area to be considered a UNESCO heritage site could approach or even include the area of the Milan stadium. The final project put forward for the candidacy will reveal the precise boundaries of the site.

To achieve the goal of making Chiaravalle a UNESCO site, it could take seven to eight years and the final decision will be made by a committee based in Paris. It is not likely that Milan would wait that long, and thus the idea of renovating San Siro may gain even more steam.

  1. Politicians playing politics…wonder how the blue side of Milan is progressing on their plans. Do they also experience the same hurdles or are they all too happy to put up house at San siro…

    1. I dont think you understand what heritage means. If Milan was to work WITH their heritage. They would renovate San Siro and stay there. If you go to San Donato with a historyless owner such as Gerry Cardinale who has no style no understanding of heritage or aestetics you would get some ridiculous Donald Trump tower Mcdonalds architecture in fluffy steal and glass structures filled with a vast landscape of consumerist mall like stores and speculative officebuildings to earn profits on god knows what they come with.

So my hopes is that the authorities follow through on preventing them to build based on Heritage regulations. It would be the most beautiful thing to avoid more devastating and more permanent scars on Milan made by DeadBird.

      1. you hope Milan does not build their own stadium and stay on san siro nad keep paying rent and have minimal income.. And you are a Milan fan?

        1. No, my hopes are that they can negotiate a shared ownership of San Siro, renovate and and maximize profits from there. When you have one of the most iconic and historical stadiums at hand that makes quite a lot of sense also from an economical standpoint. My concern is that Gerry Cardinale is not the right developer of the stadium project. My belief is he will build a low quality stadium which people dont even wanna go to in 5 years.
