Giroud vs. Okafor, Chukwueze vs. Pulisic – the XI battles for Genoa-Milan

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan will be up against Genoa tomorrow evening and due to the hectic schedule, some changes are expected to the starting XI. A few of the positions are still up in the air, though, as a report claims.

The Rossoneri will have a training session today and that will most likely determine a lot regarding the XI. It’s their only session before the game, once again due to the schedule, and Pioli will have to make a lot out of the little time he has.

According to today’s edition of Gazzetta Dello Sport (via SempreMilan), Noah Okafor could start in the No.9 role but Olivier Giroud appears to be in pole position for now. The Frenchman’s condition will be assessed today and then a decision will be made.

Tuttosport adds that Christian Pulisic and Samuel Chukwueze are battling it out for a starting spot on the right. The feeling is that the Nigerian will get the nod in the end, but he struggled against Newcastle and the American is certainly not out of the race.

Probable Milan XI (4-3-3): Maignan; Florenzi, Thiaw, Tomori, Hernandez; Musah, Adli, Reijnders; Pulisic/Chukwueze, Okafor, Leao.

  1. Giroud verses okafar …it’s Giroud for me in this match against Geneo ….This is not going to be a walkover …
The difference between the two ..Giroud is a technical craftsman,,and incredible physical strength ….He holds up the ball well allowing space for wide players to run into ..Okafar yes has got pace ,,but lacks experience and does not hold the ball up at all ..
He is not aware of his teammates around him ..
So for me this match we must win .start with Olivier and then use okafar later on in the game ..
Just think the decision to start okafor ,,might be a huge costly mistake…
I have been involved in football for a long time ,at all levels of the game ..Yes of course all players regardless of age must be rested at times ..This has to be as we have so many games coming up ..
You need a balance in football ⚽️ of age and experience,,,,that is why at the moment our midfield is looking a bit weak ,,,due to injuries…Yes of course you have to play games to get experience. We are scoring goals in the sera A …Olivier 4 goals 3 assists..( not bad )..deschamps still calls him up for his country.
I have complete confidence in our team our squad and our manager …
We will win the scuddeto this season …but Olivier Giroud will be needed to get us over the line .
He has got the experience, technical ability and belief.
Something that some of you fans lack .
But hey let’s stay together..I think most of you will agree things are looking good for us !

    1. Giroud needs to be put on the bench, he is contributing absolutely zero to this team.
      We have Jovic and Okafor.
To be honest anybody capable of running is better than Giroud now.
He is 37, his time is up at this level.
We need to move on as a team

      1. Look I don’t agree with you at all …I not only have been involved in football for a long time ,,but also watch many games ….The game against Genoa we should win ,,but okafar will contribute little ,,,just by looking how Ginoa set up …I hope pulisic / Giroud/ leao will be the trident up front …success has come in the sera A from them …
Just look at the stats ,,,look at how Genoa play …
Watch Olivier Giroud closely ,,,yin will see just how aware he is of his teammates …Yes it’s a team game !

        1. Oh I watch Giroud closely. He is aware of his teammates running past him up the field.

Look he has been good for us but his decline has now become rapid and detrimental to the team.
          It is a team game!

Perhaps your “involvement” in football is as Pioli’s assistent? Or Giroud’s personal coach?

    2. Giroud has done nothing all season. 3 of those goals were penalties. Not a single goal from open play since Day 1, and consistently one of the worst performers this season.

  2. I agree that Giroud will be needed. I disagree he will be need against Genoa.

I agree Okafur will not find success tomorrow. I disagree we need Giroud to win. There are several factors to consider.

It’s a long season and we will need Giroud at the end against top competition in the cup and CL. Indeed that money will go to replace him in the years to come.

Because he is needed for key games we need Okafur to develop against the mid and low table teams. Specifically to begin to work out how to play his game against those styles and set ups.

I suspect (by observation not anything else) that Giroud is hurt. So having a 100% Giroud come March along with an Okafur who can change the game off the bench is worth potentially dropping a few points now.

While I hope Giroud is around the next couple of years fading off the pitch and ascending in dressing room leadership, Okafur is one of our future workhorses. So this year I want him to develop so he is able to fill the gap Giroud will inevitably leave. Father time graces noone.

Incidentally, watching Zlatan now Giroud on this arc I wonder if Milan have a clever way of continuity other teams may want to consider. The more I consider this “coach on the field” notion the more it intrigues me.

  3. Pretty straight forward it seems. Giroud can’t keep up with the schedule. So Okafor comes in. Kjaer can give Tomori a rest. Puli needs a break and Chuk needs to play more…. so?
