Giroud on the verge of history with Thierry Henry’s record in sight

By Oliver Fisher -

These days, all eyes are on Qatar and the 2022 World Cup with its unexpected twists and turns. Here, outsiders beat top national teams and players set records that seemed impossible to set.

One of them is Olivier Giroud, a French player who currently shines in Milan. Up until this time, Thierry Henry was France’s top goal scorer but after the World Cup, this title can go to Giroud.

Will Giroud surpass the milestone?

It is impossible to Olivier Giroud with anyone else. During the 2018 World Cup, he didn’t score any goals but remained one of the key players making a few assists during the games against Peru and Argentina. Four years later in Qatar, Giroud has extra motivation to score a goal, as he is only one strike away from Thierry Henry who set the all-time record for France in 2010.

During the World Cup, Olivier had to score twice to equal the record of 51 goals achieved by the Arsenal legend. These goals have spread along 123 appearances at an international level – 0.41 goals per game. Giroud, by the way, has it at 0.43 thanks to 49 goals during 114 games.

The first game in Qatar against Australia was very successful for Giroud where he scored two goals and caught up with Henry. It becomes obvious that only a serious injury can stop Olivier from breaking the record during this World Cup. When asked about the record in a recent interview, Giroud said that it wasn’t something he thought about and his only goal was to help his team win.

Although everyone is waiting for Giroud to score that 52nd goal, his main duty is to perform well in a combination with Griezmann and Mbappe. Both of them have different roles than they have in their own clubs, so the partnership seems rather tense.

Despite recent misunderstandings between Giroud and Mbappe, the latter says that is a great pleasure working with a professional like Olivier. This season, Giroud has scored nine goals for Milan which only strengthened his position for the French team.

Didier Deschamps, the France head coach, says that Olivier is adored in France and supported both by the team and the fans. After Benzema’s return to the French team in 2021, Giroud’s importance decreased but his perfect physical condition and great record at Milan helped him get to the World Cup and it is not long until we see Giroud breaking Henry’s record.

About Olivier Giroud

Olivier is a French footballer currently playing for Milan. He was born on September 30, 1986, in the Chambery region and grew up in Froges where he started playing for the Olympique Club de Froges at an early age.

At the age of 13 and after six years in the team, Giroud was invited to Grenoble which was his first official football contract. As a part of the team, Olivier has scored 15 goals in 15 games which made managers really interested in this talented player.

Until 2012, Giroud played in Tours, Istres, and Montpellier but after grabbing the attention of the Premier League clubs, he was bought off by Arsenal. In 2018, he joined the Gunners’ London rivals Chelsea and in 2021 joined Milan where he has been since.

Nowadays, football fans can watch Giroud play at the World Cup. Giroud is as successful in his personal life as he is on the field. Although there were accusations of infidelity, Olivier is happily married since 2011 and has four children.

A player who is always a pleasure to watch

Olivier Giroud is one of the brightest football players not only in Milan but in the world as well. His technique, skills, and charisma contribute both to the score and to the positive impression that we, as fans, get.
