Oliver Glasner is one of the leading candidates for the AC Milan job, and he could bring Jean-Philippe Mateta with him.

Milan are looking for a new technical director and head coach, then they will turn their attentions to the summer transfer window, in which a new centre-forward is needed too. With Glasner and Mateta, they could kill two birds with one stone.

Today’s edition of Tuttosport (via MilanPress) speculates on a possible rekindling of the flame between the Frenchman and the Austrian. The two have just won the Conference League title together, with the Frenchman scoring the decisive goal in the final against Rayo Vallecano.

Mateta to Milan at last?

In January, the newspaper recalls, the Eagles striker was very close to joining Milan for around €35 m, but the operation suddenly fell through due to concerns discovered by the medical staff regarding the condition of his knee.

It is possible that Milan would have tried again for him in the summer, given that Mateta has provided answers on the field. By avoiding surgery and opting for conservative treatment, he even managed to secure a call-up to the national team.

Returning to the mercato, Mateta has not yet renewed his contract with Crystal Palace, which expires in 2027. The South London club could decide to sell him this summer to avoid a future devaluation. Here, Milan would step up, given there was already a negotiation set up.

Milan’s strikers disappointed in 2025-26, with Santiago Gimenez and Niclas Fullkrug combining for one league goal. If Glasner arrives and regardless of whether he goes for a 3-4-2-1 or a 4-2-3-1, the feeling is that a new focal point for the attack is needed.

  1. Mateta, Brahim Diaz, Atta, Gila, Zalewski
    25-30M, 25M, 25-30M, 25M, 20M

~40M from loan deals, 60M from Leao sale; Chukwueze, Musah, RLC, Estupinan, Terracianno will generate ~75M, so even if we only manage half of the deals we still are in net positive.

    Glasner and Ragnick in

    1. I really hope both Rangnick and Glasner arrive this summer. They would be the best transfer in the last six years.

  2. Mateta would be good signing. Add harry Wilson on a free transfer and grimaldo who has 1 year left on his contract to this list.

  3. Will he pass ACM’s physical? We have no idea what the issue is with his knee. Is it significant wear on the cartilage that can’t be fixed? Is it a small tear? Without knowing it’s difficult to know if he is worth it as a long term investment.

    1. Good question but he hasn’t had issues since his transfer didn’t go through. Mateta would be ideal profile for us up front.
