Vitiello: ‘Glimmer of hope’ emerges in Maignan talks – goalkeeper ‘happy at Milan’

The door for Mike Maignan’s renewal does not appear to be completely shut, with the AC Milan management working on convincing him.

Prior to Sunday’s draw against Sassuolo, the sporting director Igli Tare confirmed that the club are trying to convince Maignan to renew his deal, which expires at the end of the season.

Previous reports have suggested it is a long shot, given the goalkeeper was unhappy with how negotiations were handled earlier in the year, when a verbal agreement was believed to have been pulled from the table.

On Monday, La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Milan want an answer from the Frenchman by February but that they are willing to offer €7m net per year (bonuses included) to convince their captain to stick around.

A ray of hope?

Now, Antonio Vitiello has given a latest update on the situation during his weekly column for MilanNews, suggesting that there is still the possibility of finding an agreement.

“Milan are also working on a contract extension for Mike Maignan, and there’s a glimmer of hope from the goalkeeper. This small opening is allowing Tare and Allegri to make a serious attempt,” he begins.

“Ultimately, Mike is happy at Milan; the club adores him, and that’s an important aspect. There’s trust, but the deal must be finalised, and until then, no one wants to make any predictions about the outcome, and rightly so.”
