Guardiola happy with how Man City played against a ‘top team’ like Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

Pep Guardiola has provided his thoughts after Manchester City were beaten 3-2 by AC Milan in New York last night, praising his players for competing well against a ‘senior Champions League team’.

Milan began their preseason tour in the best possible way as they beat the Premier League champions at Yankee Stadium on Saturday night.

Erling Haaland got the opening goal of the game before Samuel Chukwueze crossed for Lorenzo Colombo twice to make it 2-1 to Paulo Fonseca’s men.

James McAtee made it 2-2 in the second half before Marco Nasti fired in a cut-back from Alexis Saelemaekers to win the game for Milan inside the final 20 minutes.

Guardiola spoke to City’s official website after the game and despite the result he was positive about what he saw against the Rossoneri, especially after conceding four to Celtic and losing to them a few days prior.

“We were better than the first game and some of the players made a step forward. It was really good in general, everyone was really good against a senior Champions League team like AC Milan,” he said.

“It was a step forward, no injuries, minutes in our legs, another test and now we fly to another game in a few days.

“It’s an incredible experience for them and the future of us. It’s good to see how they’re playing and against top teams like Celtic and AC Milan. They’re top teams with senior players.

“It’s a top experience for our growth in the academy and for ourselves to see how they perform and develop. These games are fantastic because it’s difficult to see them during the season, their character and personality.

“Normally young players for the first team can’t express themselves. This time it’s the opposite, how they improve, surrounded by senior players it’s a good message for me.”
