Guimaraes laments Tonali’s absence and backs Newcastle to qualify from UCL group

By Euan Burns -

Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has talked about the absence of Sandro Tonali from the team and his hopes of qualifying from AC Milan’s Champions League group.

The Brazilian midfielder was speaking to Milan News when he was asked what is causing the slight dip in form that Newcastle have recently experienced.

He was very quick to highlight the fact that they are without a few important players, one of which is former Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali.

When pressed further on the Italian midfielder who is serving a ban after illegal gambling, Guimaraes stressed that it was not his business.

“We are missing very important players like Tonali, Botman and Isak. I can’t say it hasn’t affected us. But I prefer not to comment on this matter, it’s his business. We have to fight for this shirt and win again,” Guimaraes said.

Newcastle are in the same Champions League group as Milan and they sit bottom of the group with two games left, and Milan are one point further ahead. Both teams have got work to do but Guimaraes thinks that the Magpies will qualify.

“With Borussia Dortmund things didn’t work in the first leg and the second leg. We knew they had a good team but we played badly. For us that defeat is a big disappointment, it’s true that we weren’t at full strength but that’s no excuse. We are frustrated but we still have two games against PSG and Milan. We have to play both to win so we can go through. We believe we’ll qualify,” he said.
