Romano: ‘Here we go!’ – Milan agree six-month dry loan with Chelsea for Felix

Things have moved really quickly in regards to Joao Felix’s negotiations, and AC Milan have reportedly wrapped the deal up with Chelsea in the last few minutes.

Felix’s name was heavily mentioned at the start of January, but due to Chelsea’s loan parameters, the deal seemed to be difficult to complete. As a result, things went quite quiet down that avenue, at least until the last few days.

Reports have stated that Felix ‘wants’ a move to Milan and the idea of working with Sergio Conceicao has made him push for the move it seems, and with the Blues’ situation opening up slightly, there was slightly more wiggle room for negotiations.

Once again, a loan deal was the target with the Rossoneri spending large on another attacker already this window, and the Blues have become increasingly more open to the idea.

Until the point of now, where a deal has been agreed, per Fabrizio Romano’s report this afternoon. According to the journalist, a bid has been accepted by the London outfit for a ‘straight loan’ with no option.

The Diavolo will cover the full salary of the Portuguese attacker and the full package will cost in excess of €5m over the six-month period.

As Romano says, the deal is done and ‘here we go’!

    1. Given his wages, we would never have been able to finalise an option in time.

Wee need him to fall in love with Milan in the next few months then accept lower terms to stay.

    1. Training?!?! Do you understand anything about football? He’s 25. He’s the 4th most expensive player of all time. He has almost 50 caps for Portugul. Youngsters making their way are trained. Now even if we took an actual youngster on loan, so what? Which players have Milan trained for other big clubs this decade that have gone on to become superstars? That’s right, none. Brahim Diaz warms the Real Madrid bench.

      1. Anyone who would come in for 5 months and get us to UCL next season gets my approval. Even Emerson Royal’s twin if he can get us there.

  1. Felix on dry loan is a bit meh.

Hopefully he has some motivation to perform.

I still cant understand why we are not looking at any midfielders and in fact there are reports of Benny being offered to Marseille

    We need a DM desperately.
Fofana, Benny, Tiji is a nice start but they have no backups except Musah and he has been all over the place. I see Belhayne is gone to Lazio for 13m, why couldn’t we get him?

    1. I don’t get the dry loan need. Is this an audition so they can revisit a purchase in the summer if he is useful? Then why not an option?

My guess is Chelsea want to evaluate if he can regain form so they can either utilize him or sell him at a higher fee..

On a side note, I don’t know that I like Milan leaning onto Mendes so much…

      1. If they couldn’t agree a fee or a contract for the option though, I guess it comes down to a choice of dry loan or no loan.

Agree about Mendes, unless he can get Rayan Aït-Nouri when Hernandez decides to leave!

      2. Agreed. Should have included an option in the event he does well we have first opportunity to sign. If he does well other teams will jump in. If he does bad then we don’t have to exercise the option

        Another Furlani special.

Hope he shines so Chelsea demand 50M for him and Gerry is put in a corner – spend the $$ or least him leave despite his success

        1. It’s a tricky deal. On paper this guys should be out of our reach, both in terms of transfer fee and salary. I think this might be the only way to get him in the long run, As papa_frezz said above, probably the only way to sign him permanently is to get him to fall in love with Milan and get him to accept lower wages and press Chelsea to lower their transfer demands.

        2. Like someone above mentioned, hopefully he enjoys his stay here enough to lower his demands in case he wants to stay …

I don’t have my hopes up for him given his jumping around from club to club. But he is an alternative to using Puli there, dropping Reijnders back deeper…

          1. “Like someone above mentioned, hopefully he enjoys his stay here enough to lower his demands in case he wants to stay … ”

This. Players do get to have a say in their transfers.

  2. If he doesn’t workout then not a big risk, if he does well we will have a long summer drama story about the price and negotiations haha

    1. If he does work out, then that would mean 4th place and another cup (or two) in the trophy cabinet.
If that were the case, i wouldn’t be opposed to negotiating for him in the Summer.

Felix was an end-of-the-mercato stop-gap opportunity. Not having an option is normal.

      1. They could try to “Diaz” this transfer in the summer for another year long loan… I don’t know. Let’s see how he does first …

  3. This player is a genuine star whose talent is wasted on teams that don’t fully appreciate it. I am very optimistic and hope he can shine in the league. If he performs well, we should consider making his move permanent in the summer. Milan hasn’t had a talent like this since prime Kaka.

    1. He’s really not, though. He flashes enough potential to keep clubs interested, but he simply isn’t good enough to get to the top level. He has technical ability, but he’s not a great finisher and he’s an incredibly selfish player. That said, he’ll probably still be an upgrade from Okafor and Chukwueze.

  4. Pity there’s no option, but IMO that’s much less risky than a permanent transfer on his wages – I think he has a lot of upside but he’s also the sort of player we’ve had issues with before; technically gifted, but will he work hard for the team? And will he fit the long term tactical approach…? Who knows. But this is a good way to find out and hopefully if it all works out we can make it permanent.

  5. Obsessing if it’s a dy loan, or having an option or a outright transfer.
    Who cares!
    You are getting an audition.
What if you sugn him on a permanent transfer and he flops like he did everywhere else?
More than half of Juventus signings these past 6 months are dry loans including Conceição’s son.
Bayern Munich won the UCL with Perisic and Coutinho on dry loans. Coutinho scored 2 goals vs his parent club.
I wish Okafor, Chukwueze, Origi, etc were also just dry loans, instead of permanent transfers. Now Milan is stuck with them.
    Hopefully Felix works out.
I’d rather they signed a midfielder but instead they keep bringing forwards. Gimenez, Sottil, now Felix.

    1. No, auditions are loans with a signing option. There is a scenario where he does so well that his price goes up or Chelsea decides to keep him. Then what? No we’re left hoping that he falls in love with the club in the event he does do well, because only he will then be able to convince Chelsea to let him go for a price Milan can afford and at a workable salary too.

    2. “Obsessing if it’s a dy loan, or having an option or a outright transfer.
      Who cares!
      You are getting an audition.”

This! Who the F cares if we leaves next summer if we get into UCL? What’s more important? Tying a player to the club for x years or getting into the UCL? I know what I’d answer.

  6. Well, maybe the best deal would be a loan with an option to buy included, but ok, if he is successful with us, maybe he would be inclined to accept a pay cut and we can negotiate a transfer with Chelsea. Let’s see.

  7. Okafor going to Napoli is interesting to me cos Conte KNOWS talent and since he requested Okafor, we might have committed another blunder. Fingers crossed

    1. Napoli tried to buy other wingers, but they failed to convince them or could not afford to pay. Okafor was a last resort.

  8. I don’t like the dry loan, but man he could be a great addition for us. I feel optimistic about a run at top 4. With Santi, Walker and now Felix, can we also dream of a UCL run??

I’ve seen different reporting, but if it’s €5m all-in (loan plus salary) that’s a solid deal. If it’s €5m fee plus salary, that’s pretty expensive.

  9. Two very interesting moves with Gimenez and Felix. My main thoughts this transfer was for poor Fofana. At this pace and minutes he is playing surly he will be injured by the end of the year.

  10. He always reminded me of Kaka in the way he plays, while never quite reaching those levels obv. A nice addition – hope he does well. Right, now we got 8 hours left to get a midfielder in..

  11. We can criticise alot the management have done from tjhe summer and onwards, but this winter mercato have been the best in many years-

    Gimenez for Morata
    Walker for Calabria
    Joao Felix for (Jovic?)
    Sottil for (Okafor?)

That is a significant upgrade on 3 positions. Very excited to see how fast they can make their debut

    1. Really?
We don’t know how Giminez will pan out. Maybe he produces the same as Morata and then fans will be calling for his sale in the summer….or he impresses. Never know
Walker is two steps forward but with Calabria going to Bologna, a direct rival and a homegrown player, it’s one step backwards as well.
Felix is the only clear addition rather than an upgrade because we don’t really have any creative/ CAM type players in the team anymore. Unless he’s a backup striker or backup winger for Puli and Leao. He’d have to recreate his Benfica form which was eons ago.

  12. Good signing. Despite all the hurdles, great that we got him. After what Conceicao has done twice against Inter, and, Juventus in Riyadh, he deserves what he needs. This is a great opportunity for Felix to rekindle his football career. The coach believes in him; that’s a good starting point. Welcome, to Milan!

  13. Great addition! Now we have players that can make difference on the field. I do not care if it’s a dry loan, as long as he helps us achieve the CL spot for the next season. Welcome Joao!

  14. Dry loan is best, he hasn’t been consistent in the last few seasons, no use tying him up if he performs like Morata.

  15. imho, Milan management has been the most aggressive and successful in Serie A this Jan. As @Dannyboy said above, all are upgrades.

Joao Felix as a dry loan is appropriate; if he does well, he’s not going to want to go back to Chelsea and he’ll be worth the 35m-45m eu that Chelsea will want.

Walker has already boosted the backline after 1 game and Gimenez should be a beast.

Need to study up on Sottil.

    1. We wouldn’t have to have done this in January, a market that is notoriously difficult and more expensive that the summer, if we’d gotten the LAST TWO SUMMERS RIGHT. What serious club signs players in August only to want to get rid of them in January? Someone is not doing a good job.

      1. “What serious club signs players in August only to want to get rid of them in January? Someone is not doing a good job.” This!!!

      2. Don’t be too negative. Yes now it’s too late for scudetto but at least, they try to make upgrade and they success. I still think our main problems like Emerson and Morata + Tammy was Fonseca Wishes .

  16. At first I was a little annoyed that there is no option, but it’s MUCH better than if there was an OBLIGATION to buy. The truth is, he is immensely talented but has also never found a home. Could he land on a team and be a regular MOTM type player for 6 years and win trophies – sure. Could he come for this loan, not make an impact and then we are relieved we didn’t pay 40 million – sure. Personally, I like it when international players get to play together at club so I think it’s cool Leao/Felix will play together just like Theo/Maignan. If he gets regular time and does well I would imagine he would push to stay (as he shares an agent with Conceicao), he must be tired of moving.

  17. For this , our management deserve respect for this mercato . Walker, Gimenez, Felix + backup player for midfield and wing Sottil … much better mercato then last one. This is real upgrade

  18. Another shinny toy that we can use but not the most dire need. Good luck Joao , hope you are better cheer than Chelsea like all our other former Chelsea footballer.

    1. Where is our “dire need”? IMO it was striker and we got Gimenez. Then it was RB and we got Walker. Then it was help on the wings for Leao and Puli and we got Felix, who can also play at AM (where Tijji and Puli can also play). CM? Yeah, maybe in the long run, but if we have Felix, who I am assuming will expect to get minutes, and I further assume will get many of those minutes at AM, then we defacto gain a CM for depth, because Tijji moves back down to the double pivot and sends Benny to the bench. So this isn’t a dire need anymore, and we can wait until summer to make a proper investment (Ricci or Frendrup) there. The only real need left then IMO, is a real backup for Theo, but I guess they will persist with using Terra or Jimenez there.

  19. From what I’ve seen of him, I don’t think João is the right move. But hey, maybe Conceiçāo can work some Portuguese magic and get him to reach his full potential. Obviously, I hope it works, but don’t think this is an immediate need.

    1. Conceicao probably wants Felix in order to enhances the fast break. This could proves a good partnership with Puli.
If Felix cannot score on the fast break he can be used to feed Puli. We know that Puli can score. Puli cannot depend on Reijnders for a pass. At Atletico Madrid and Cheslea, Felix was good at sprinting down the field but missing too many shots.

      1. Why send felix on loan?
why does enzo keep starting sancho?
why play sancho ahead of neto?
currently palmer is not performing, felix could provide improvement in that midfield, left wing, right wing or false nine, jackson is more of a winger than a number 9, sometimes play him on the left wing and give guiu more chance to prove himself, palmer needs rest, bring back petrovic from strassbouge and sign a world class stricker

      2. Have you watched Felix play? How many good passes does he average per game? Didn’t Felix and Puli play on the same failed Chelsea team? I don’t think Felix had an assist in a whole half season playing the creative 10 role for Chelsea that year.
