A journalist who covers AC Milan has claimed that Stuttgart head coach Sebastien Hoeneß is ‘more likely’ to be chosen than Oliver Glasner.
Over the past few days, there has been a lot of talk about Glasner becoming the new manager at Milan, replacing Massimiliano Allegri. The Austrian supposedly met the leadership on Tuesday and had a positive six-hour meeting, but it seems other profiles are being considered too.

Speaking on Radio Tutto Napoli, Monica Colombo – a journalist for Corriere della Sera – spoke about the future of the Milan dug out. She threw another name into the hat, one that hasn’t been mentioned by major sources.
“I would be surprised if Milan were to focus on Vincenzo Italiano, because it would mean disavowing the corporate line set by Cardinale. The orientation seems to be to rely on a technical director like Ralf Rangnick and a coach chosen by him, like Glasner or, more likely, Hoeness,” she said (via MilanNews).
An impressive résumé
Since taking over at Stuttgart in April 2023, Hoeneß has done an excellent job. He saved them from relegation in the final part of 2022-23, then secured back-to-back Champions League qualifications including finishing runners-up to Bayern Munich in 2023-24.
In the 2024-25 season,, Hoeneß guided VfB Stuttgart to the DFB-Pokal by beating DSC Arminia in the final. This was the club’s first major piece of silverware since their 2007 Bundesliga triumph and their first German Cup victory in 28 years.

So putting aside the unrealistic names, the bland names, and the the “more things change, the more things stay the same” names, here are some “outside the box” thoughts:
Fabio Grosso – has achieved good results with limited resources and young players, favors a 4-3-3, played for big clubs and won a world cup. He’s being targeted by Fiorentina (so technically by the director that Milan wanted to hire last summer).
Ernesto Valverde – highly experienced, has won numerous titles, has coached big clubs (so he knows how to deal with the climate and players), favors a 4-2-3-1, out of contract this summer.
Sebastian Hoeness – They want to go German? Maybe consider him. Uses 3-4-2-1, so it wouldn’t be a radical departure in system, maybe even better to continue with a back 3. Has had good results with Stuttgart, including a second place finish not to long ago, football is in his blood.
Raffaele Palladino – I think he’s had good results and is underrated. He deserves a shot a big club (bigger than Fiorentina anyway), and would also represent a continuation of the back 3.

I follow the Bundesliga. He preferred formation is indeed the 3-4-2-1.
In 2025/26 Stuttgart played 53 matches:
– 32 games with 4 defenders
– 21 game with 3 defenders
So he kinda plays both.

How did he secure back-to-back Champions League qualifications when they’ve finished 9th in 2024–25 season and played in Europa League in 2025-26.
