GdS: ‘One too many’ – how Camarda’s growth changes the future of Milan’s attack

Paulo Fonseca announced this afternoon that Francesco Camarda will get his first ever AC Milan start against Cagliari, and it could change the planning for the future.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport write, Camarda has already left an impression in the handful of minutes he has had off the bench this season, most notably with his disallowed goal in the Champions League win over Club Brugge.

The fact that he got game time last season against Fiorentina and Frosinone shows that – compared to those who are the same age as him – his path to regular senior football is a bit different and a lot shorter.

Having demonstrated not only that he can handle the pressure, but that he can carve out a leading role at 16 on a stage like that of the Champions League, it makes a bit of a difference and leaves an impression.

The management though will not change their thinking regardless of how it goes in Sardinia. Camarda will “only” be called in other circumstances when it will be necessary to beef up the attack, otherwise he will continue his journey with Milan Futuro.

It can be said that the Champions League outing was above all a symbolic accelerator for Camarda’s path, while starting against Cagliari has more practical effects and could have repercussions next summer.

The scenario is not so complicated to imagine: if his growth continues at this pace, from next season Camarda will most likely be included permanently in the first team. Tammy Abraham arrived on a dry loan while Luka Jovic’s contract will expire again.

Translated: at least one of the two is destined to say goodbye, based on how the next few months evolve. If Abraham were to return to the old self, it is conceivable that Roma would keep him or ask for a big sum, but neither he nor Jovic appear to be physically reliable at the moment.

Until last summer, Camarda seemed destined for the classic loan spell to gain experience. The Futuro offers this possibility by remaining internally, but so does a Serie A game away against Cagliari too.

  1. I’m gonna guess the plan all along was for this young blood to develop next to an experienced striker. Seems like that’s how Fonseca will integrate him. Morata with Camarda.

I think Jovic is getting phased out and so far Abraham has shown little to want to keep him.

    1. Agreed. Morata is our starter and should remain so. I think Tammy should be the no. 2 for noe, as well, but Camarda should get more and more minutes as the season goes on so that he’s essentially the no. 2 by season’s end. Then Jovic can leave, Tammy goes back to Roma and Morata and Camarda can form the striker department next season from the start. The kid needs to be brought along slowly, and I think this a good game for him to get a start/minutes. I think Morata is going to be a great example for Camarda to learn from in many ways.

  2. This is exactly why futuro was such a good investment. Being able to phase in young players slowly whilst not sacrificing their ability to play regularly and get that experience playing against men (not boys). It’s clear the loan to develop doesn’t really work that well. Gabbia, Calabria and Locatelli all came up through the system got their first league minutes with the club and made their mark. On the flip look at Columbo, Bart, Maldini (I haven’t bought into the hype, 10 games, 1 goal 0 assists)

  3. I’d certainly take him over abraham at this point. Tammy can barely avoid tripping on his own feet. I can only assume Jovic is still injured because he would do very well in this 2 CF plan we seem to end every game with
