How Milan have ended up paying over €12m per year on coaches

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are currently paying out a substantial monthly amount on coaches, which might well affect decisions they make in the future.

Milan drew 2-2 with Lazio away from home on Saturday night which followed a 2-1 defeat in Parma and a 2-2 draw against Torino, meaning two points from three games to begin the new era under Paulo Fonseca.

Having arrived to mixed opinions to begin with, the pressure is on the Portuguese coach to turn things around quickly, especially when looking at the importance of the games that will come after the international break.

Sky even reported yesterday that Milan’s priority now is to use the break to calm things down, because when the games resume there will be a huge trio of games at San Siro with Venezia, Liverpool and Inter all within a week. After those three games ‘Fonseca’s position will be evaluated’.

As Football Italia report, Stefano Pioli and Milan parted ways at the end of last season but his contract was never formally terminated, which means it continues to run and he is being paid €7.5m gross (€4m net) until June 2025.

On top of that, Fonseca has a contract to June 2027 that is worth €4.7m gross (€2.5m net), which means a commitment of €12.2m gross for the 2024-25 season on coaches past and present, therefore over €1m per month.

If Milan were to sack Fonseca then they would likely hire another coach which would only add to the expense, something that is likely to factor into how long he is given to turn things around.

  1. This to EVERYONE: Zlatan is NOT the technical Director like Maldini. Zlatan is just the advisor of the owner! He just gives advice and doesn’t really take decisions and is still learning 😭🙏

    1. Exactly. Someone who understands his role. The criticism of him is absurd. What he said about Futuro takes the pressure off the players. The youngsters look upto him. He’s important for the players.

      1. He’s an easy target. The b*tching little whiners aren’t known for their high IQ so what would you expect? First they complain that Zlatan is just a mascot. Then they complain that Zlatan wanted Fonseca and hired him. Next they’ll complain that he hasn’t fired him yet. Z probably has like 5% influence on club’s decisions. If even that.

  2. Hello.
Yes they knew this will be the case when they fired pioli. Unless he got a job.
I’m more interested how much moncada makes. And furlani. And that president banker guy. And basically everyone in the management of the club.
Bar zlatan. He’s paid by redbird

  3. Something isn’t working in Milan management. It could be the owner that is an American, clueless about the sport and how it works in Italy. He bought a struggling giant and is treating it like a mid table League 1 club.

It could be club President who was put in place by previous owner to help navigate Italian politics and speed the process of building a stadium, failed at both miserably. HE constantly has very public outburst about how participating in UCL is the only important thing because it brings in money. More important than Scudetto or any other trophy.

Maybe its the CEO who is a glorified accountant with overpriced diploma and has zero to none experience in football.

Could be chief scout turned director, promoted to the level of his incompetence, who has a fetish for cheap French players.

    1. Maybe it is the Honorary Vice President, that although a club legend and one of the best defenders ever to grace a football field has a charisma of a raw potato.

Or maybe its… whatever he is in the club. Arrogant man-child with god complex that has all the football experience and zero managerial. Who still posts on Instagram and X about himself like he is still an active player and not a person that is supposed to be running club that is Europe royalty.

With all that in mind, why would anyone be surprised we are paying both Pioli and Fonseca. Club has lost its way, something needs to change. Management or owner or players, or maybe just our expectations while these people are sunning our beloved club.

    2. Sheeeesh, careful brother. There are bunch of Cardinale’s 🍖 riders hiding in their cage. Once Milan gets a 3 point, they will show up like bacterias and will attack you and try to shut your mouth with their sarcastic bullish thoughts

  4. poli 4 + fonseca 2,5 so if jeri sack fonseca, he’ll bring even cheaper coach to avoid bigger lost?
cz he’s too smart in business right?

  5. “… might well affect decisions they make in the future.”

It’s the decisions they’ve already taken that brought us here. What’s happening now are the consequences of these knee jerk decisions. Many of us saw that from the beginning, some are slowly starting to realize just now.

They need to change their approach on running the club asap before they plunge even deeper.

  6. Why do people blame zlatan lol. He wanted Conte and van bommel. Not saying those are better choices but he wasn’t the one to pick out fonseca.

  7. We already knew that some fans around here were hating the biggest legend of the club, now they’re also hating the few Scudetto winning world class players remaining in the team. Forza land of the free

  8. The fact that milan pays more for pioli than fonseca means that milan believe and knows that pioli are better than fonseca. And so far it approved right..let’s in the next few weeks.

  9. The directors pick the coach and players, not Cardinale. Cardinal understands business, not football. He signs the cheques. If this season ends in disaster, Moncada and Furlani will be sacked. Ibrahimovic is just for PR and he’s new to this job. Criticising him is ridiculous.

    1. Well Cardinale’s the one hiring the team behind the club. He’s the owner and he’s the shot caller. He should hire a reputable sporting director the moment he sacked Maldini and Massara but instead opted to promote a scout and former youth coordinator to spearhead our sporting department.

    1. In theory yes, but that would mean admitting publicly that firing Pioli was a terrible decision and they will not have the balls for that. Not going to happen.

  10. And this is the reason people should stop dreaming about Fonseca’s sacking and getting someone like Allegri to take charge. The management will never spend 20M€/y (30M€ with taxes?) on (three!!!) coaches.

If Fonseca gets sacked, he will be replaced by Bonera or the waterboy.
