Mike Maignan of AC Milan

CM: Forced reflections – how recent mistakes can change Maignan’s Milan future

Mike Maignan’s poor form is just one issue in what is fast becoming one of the most complicated seasons in AC Milan’s recent history, and it could change the future.

As Calciomercato.com report, Milan are experiencing the disturbing situation of not being able to cling to the star players. While the winter signings have so far offered mixed contributions, the leaders of the dressing room seem to have also succumbed to the ‘general mediocrity’ of the season.

Maignan is no exception and his latest blunder against Torino proved that, the sensational own-goal credited to the German centre-back but realistically the fault of the goalkeeper who hammered a clearance straight at him.

It maintained a period of decline that especially since the beginning of 2025 has become increasingly evident, costing important points in the league as well as contributing to the Champions League play-off exit with his serious error in the first leg.

There have been other mistakes too, like the goals let in against Cagliari and Como. Mike seems to be struggling with shots from distance, in particular those aimed at the near post, yet sometimes he will pull off the most difficult of saves as a reminder of his top level.

However, in the context of such a complicated season in which previous pillars of the team have collapsed (see Theo Hernandez and, to an extent, Rafael Leao), there has to be some thought about a possible relegation.

Despite a ‘well advanced negotiation’ for the renewal of his contract, Maignan himself cannot be certain of defending the goal of Milan in the coming seasons. In other words, there is the possibility he could renew and be sold.

  1. To an extent? 😀

Saelemaekers has as many goals in Serie A as the unnamed MVP even though the Belgian has played half the minutes the Portuguese has. I’d say there’s plenty of room for improvement.

    1. I thought it was all 5 of them… Either way, an absolute giant of a human being with a bigger wingspan than a Triceratops. He’s definitely bigger than Torino, doubt he stays there much longer.

  2. Just let him rest a game or so. Get his mind reset. Maybe not have his take the armband I dunno. Torriani has shown tremendous ability.

    1. It all points to a bigger problem at the club. There’s a lot of nervous energy and pressure at the club. That’s why they are all effing up at the same time… Mike, Theo, Musah, Puli…

  3. I don’t agree magnian is a good and great keeper I don’t t what the management are expecting if you have 5 from 10 players Infront of him that are not performing than obviously that he start doing a mistake or 2 .
