La Stampa: Ibrahimovic contract renewal could hinge on World Cup qualification

By Mitchell Wilks -

A contract renewal with Milan could depend on how Zlatan Ibrahimovic fares on international duties with Sweden, a report claims.

Ibrahimovic made an emphatic return to the national team earlier in 2022 following a five-year period of retirement, in a bid to help Sweden qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

La Stampa (via MilanNews) report that his World Cup qualifying campaign with the national team could actually affect his status with Milan. Qualifying for Qatar could prove key to his renewal with the Rossoneri.

The 40-year-old continues to defy the odds by maintaining such a high quality when he’s on the pitch. That has been a limiting factor this season, however, with Ibrahimovic bogged down by regular injury woes.

He’s managed eight goals from 22 appearances in all competitions this season, leaving Milan with a dilemma as to whether or not he is worth renewing, also taking into consideration his high wage demands.

  1. I said exactly this months ago. It depends on Sweden, which to be frank has nothing to do with the club’s best interests. Giving Ibra another 1 year contract so that he can basically be fit for the WC is just a massive show of respect for him. I think he has earned it, but it may be detrimental for Milan in the long run. Why not sign a 1 year deal at Malmo? Close the loop.

  2. This is crazy at this point, he’s not played most of the year and is the club’s highest earner… he’s done a lot for the team and I’d be really happy if he stays on in some capacity, but he can’t be doing it as the top earner, it’s just not worth it
