Ibrahimovic explains decision to hire Fonseca: “His identity with our players”

By Isak Möller -

During today’s big press conference, Zlatan Ibrahimovic confirmed that AC Milan have appointed Paulo Fonseca as their new head coach. After months of speculation, therefore, the rumours can be put to bed and the Swede also explained the decision.

Although many names have been mentioned in the last two months, the arrival of Fonseca has been pretty much certain for a while now. Today, the official confirmation arrived from Milan and Ibrahimovic, during the pre-2024/25 season press conference.

After talking about his return and role at Milan, Ibrahimovic was asked to make the big announcement and confirmed that Fonseca is the new head coach. He explained the management’s decision as well, stating that a lot of thought went into it.

“The new head coach will be Paulo Fonseca. We have studied him well and after giving it a lot of thought, we decided to move forward with him. We want his identity with the players we have, an attacking-minded football. After five years, with all due respect to Pioli, we wanted to come up with something new and fresh for the players.

“We have studied how Fonseca prepares matches, how he prepares the players and how he sets up his teams. We wanted to bring something new to San Siro as well. With the players that we have, we want it to click and Fonseca fits the bill, he is the right man,” he stated (via SempreMilan).

The pre-season starts in early July and while some players won’t be available from the beginning, such as those at the Euros, Fonseca will still have a decent amount of time to build a foundation.

  1. ….“ With the players that we have, we want it to click and Fonseca fits the bill, he is the right man” …. I swear that I read “ he is the yes man” the first time lol

  2. Simple, effective, easy. This is who we’re hiring. It’s the best for us. Boom. Now let’s go! (We’ll complain later on when it doesn’t work out …but for now…Forza!) 🤣🤣🤣

  3. I swear that guy will sell his mother for money.. Great champion great player but at the end he needs to feed a family. Every word that comes out of his mouth sounds like Gerry – i will do everything in my power to win .. the future is bright blah blah. We are silent but we work alot – blah blah – we are not even close to announce a single player while the other teams especially Juve are flyin . But at the end thats how team who actually have ambition to win act – fast and smooth. Well lets see maybe the 3rd year of Gerrys reign we actually win something else besides Berlusconi trophy

Yeah. Fans want to hear more phrases like “I don’t really care how we do as long as the salary comes on time.”, “I’m not into winning. I just like watch grown men sweat on pitch.” or “Can I have a beer, please?”

FFS. What do you want the new coach to say? “I’m deeply sorry for what happened to Paolo Maldini. It’s a disgrace and I HATE how the owners and management handled the case. And I also won’t tolerate ANY sells here.”. Would that make you people happy?

        1. Be your self or don’t put your name to something that ain’t you that’s what I’m saying. It’s clear the direction of the club is different to what the fans expect. And listening today to his interview did that sound like Zlatan at all? I will give you another example Maldini – a real Milanista who gave his all, put his name behind his words didn’t coward to say the things as they are and what has he got in return? Maybe this return is what he’s scared of. I will say it again from a lion to a dog on a leash that’s what he has become. Why didn’t Furlani or Moncada sat on this chair instead of him?

          1. Because Furlani has a charm of a mouse and Moncada doesn’t do pressers. There’s only one lion there. Sporting Director de facto.

  4. So basically what Zlatan said we hired this affordable cheap manager that fits our squad. Way to go Zlatan, a great interview to show how much the management including you respect our players.

What a disgraceful comments from the person that we thought he is there to remind RedBird who is Milan.

  5. “We want his identity with the players we have, an attacking-minded football.”

I would argue that, more than anything, we need to focus on fixing the defensive side of the game. That’s why I was rooting for different nominations. Nothing against Fonseca per se, just not the right profile imo.

But oh well, what’s done is done. No point in criticizing the coach before even his first game.
    Forza Paulo, I guess.

  6. let see. we have to give time for Ibra and Fonseca. you can find from this interview that it’s more smart project than some people thinking. Milan u-23 project sounds also very nice.
    .
and about mercato. I think that journalists too much talk about Zirkzee in Milan. especially, plenty of different team also interested of him. if he will look at money first so definitely he chooses for example MU. in other way he will come to us.
    .
but it could be really smart if Ibra with rest trio think about less popular players, not so expensive, but still with great future and nice surprise. for example Ellis Simms or Liam Delap.

  7. im sure fans would be fawning over this appointment if it was maldini. Give the guy a chance and then criticize him. At least its not Pirlo like maldini wanted.
