Ibrahimovic opens up about uncertain future at Milan: “Maybe there is another year”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is currently recovering from an injury and will likely miss AC Milan’s final game of the season on Sunday. The Swede has now opened up about his future, which is rather uncertain.

Most sources are all on the same wavelength: this will be Ibrahimovic’s final season with the Milan shirt. However, the 41-year-old seemingly wants to continue his career for at least one more year and in recent months, he has been linked with Monza.

Speaking to Gazzetta Dello Sport this morning, as cited by MilanNews, Ibrahimovic opened up about his future with Milan. He also confirmed that Aadriano Fallian, the CEO of Monza, has been calling him non-stop lately. Of course, it should be mentioned that they are also good friends from Gallian’s time at Milan.

On his recovery…

“I’m fine. I’ve worked a lot and I’ve forced myself, not only this year but also last year. And when I was out of action, the team needed me. When you know what needs to be done but you can’t do it, then you don’t give yourself any peace. I haven’t found the right balance yet. My mentality is too strong, I feel like Superman but I need more balance.”

On retiring…

“Leave and change my life? No, I’m not a quitter. But there must also be joy in what you do. We’re not there yet, though, I still think I have something to give. Do I think about quitting? No. Do I have to continue playing? Yes. But I have to find balance just like in life. If you don’t have serenity and stability, you are a bomb, and bombs explode.”

On Monza…

“Galliani has been calling me every day for three years and he always tells me that Monza is beautiful, that there is a beautiful nature, that the contract is already on the table. But we’re not there yet. I’m a Milan player and I’m proud of it. At a certain age, there’s no more ego, you don’t need to prove anything. I’m here to help Milan, and not like I’m doing now. I want to be on the pitch, I can help a lot more there.”

On his future with Milan…

“I don’t know what happens within the club. I know that I’m fine at Milan and that Milan is my home. I don’t know anything about my contract, last year I said to Paolo ‘you do it’. And I got a piece of paper to sign. I don’t know what’s inside, maybe there’s an option for another year. It’s enough for me to know that I’m a Milan player and then I know what I have to do. The rest doesn’t matter to me. All I care about is getting back to field, otherwise the joy disappears.”

It remains to be seen what will happen on Sunday evening. Ibrahimovic will be at the stadium for the game and after the final whistle, he might get a send-off from the Curva Sud. However, nothing has been decided yet because of the uncertainty surrounding his future.

    1. The same player who was decisive in our Scudetto win? Chill out mate it’s not like it’s our loss in giving him a new contract. His T-shirt sales would pay double the amount he will ask for.

  1. Im very surpirsed he is gonna retire after these words here.. :O i dident belive he would retire when he said this 🙁 weird why he say this and then retire.. maybe he would have not retired if milan gave him a new contract .. 🙁
