Ibrahimovic hints at renewal as he discusses retirement: “Milan have given me happiness”

By Isak Möller -

At the age of 40, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still playing at the highest level and it might still be a while before retirement. Regardless of Sweden’s World Cup status, it seems the striker has one more season in him.

The striker hasn’t played a whole lot lately as he recently returned from an injury, getting just a few minutes here and there off the bench. He’s currently on international duty with Sweden but was suspended against the Czech Republic last night, a game which his side won 1-0 after extra-time.

This means that the hopes of playing at the World Cup still lives for Sweden and Ibrahimovic, taking on Poland on Tuesday. Speaking to UEFA, Ibrahimovic shared his thoughts on playing for Milan and what the future holds.

“I play with a lot of emotion because Milan have given me happiness, it’s a club that has given me a lot and I think I have spent more years here than in all the clubs I have represented. It was great [to be back in the UEFA Champions League]. After just missing out for a couple of years, everyone was very happy to be back.

“The future is yet to be written, I don’t make plans so let’s see what happens. I don’t want to retire and then say that I could have continued, because I would regret it for the rest of my life. I want to play as long as possible. The reality is that I will play until I see someone better than me, so that means I will continue,” he jokingly concluded.

It remains to be seen how many minutes Ibrahimovic will get against Poland, but it’s clear that he won’t play from start. Sweden making it through to the World Cup would be a further incentive for the striker to not retire, who will be 41 when the tournament takes place.
