Ibrahimovic sends strong message to ‘best in the world’ Donnarumma: “He could have become Mr. Milan”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has sent a strong message to Gianluigi Donnarumma about his decision to play hard ball over a new contract.

Donnarumma’s contract with Milan expires next month and it seems almost certain now that he will leave the club after nine years both in the Primavera and in the senior side. The 22-year-old is in agent Mino Raiola’s hands with Barcelona, PSG and Juventus all mentioned as possible destinations.

Milan meanwhile appear to have made the decision to move on from Donnarumma having signed Mike Maignan from Lille on a five-year deal as his replacement, with Maldini acting as the Italy international stalled on signing a renewal.

Ibrahimovic spoke about the goalkeeper’s situation during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, praising his ability but also criticising his choice to turn his back on the club.

“I am sorry for Gigio, I’m asking you: ‘How much is he worth?’ He came through the academy of Milan, he could be the team’s goalkeeper for the next 20 years, maybe not 20, because he is not Ibra (laughs),” he said (via FootballItalia).

“However, he is the best in the world. He could have become Mr. Milan, like Maldini, but it takes two to tango. I would tell him to stay at Milan until the end.”
