Given that his contract expiry date is only a few months away, Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s future continues to be the subject of intense speculation.
According to Calciomercato.com, there are three important factors that weigh on the Swede’s mind. The first is linked to the fact that the he has not started the game since January 23 in the match against Juventus, when he was unable to even finish the first half before coming off with injury.
The second is the news of his call-up to the Swedish national team for their World Cup play-offs despite the fact he is suspended for the semi-final match on Thursday against the Czech Republic.
The third is the role that Ibrahimovic might have if he were to extend his contract and stay. If he does renew, then he would become an obvious luxury rather than having a leading role which will be difficult for a player with Zlatan’s motivations to accept.
At this point the decision belongs to Ibrahimovic more than to Stefano Pioli though, as he knows his own body best and he will make a call on whether he feels it is worth continuing from a physical and mental point of view.
The management know that him re-signing would take away space for another striker. With or without the Scudetto Milan will have to raise the bar of their squad next season, but if Sweden make the World Cup then everything might just fall into place for him to renew.
