Romano: Sporting CP star Inacio a ‘main option’ for Milan in centre-back hunt

AC Milan have turned their attentions to signing a new central defender, and Goncalo Inacio is the hot name now.

As of Sunday evening it looked as though Milan were going to be able to tick the centre-back box almost as quickly as they were able to resolve their striker pursuit with the lightning €70m+ deal for Goncalo Ramos.

Antonio Silva was the name in the frame, and things seemed to be heading towards a rapid €20m agreement with Benfica. However, the Portuguese club have put up a wall now as they want to get the 22-year-old to renew his deal, and certainly won’t sell at the price mentioned.

Inacio: A name to watch

In a video published on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano confirmed some of the stories floating around from various sources regarding Milan’s interest in signing Inacio.

“Milan are working to give Ruben Amorim a new central defender . Regarding Antonio Silva, I said that there is no evidence of an agreement with the player, nor of any negotiations with Benfica, who have made it known that they have not had any contact with the Rossoneri,” he said (via MilanNews).

“The Portuguese club is very attentive to the transfer market and has an excellent relationship with the defender’s agent Jorge Mendes, so if Milan had started negotiations for Antonio Silva, even just on the player’s side, Benfica would be 100% aware of it.

“Instead, they have received no information, while there has been no direct contact from the player. Therefore, as of today, it does not appear that there are any ongoing negotiations between Milan and Benfica for Antonio Silva.

“From what I understand, AC Milan and Amorim’s list includes at least three defenders. AC Milan have started to narrow down their options, and one name worth keeping an eye on is Gonçalo Inacio.

“He’s not the only player AC Milan are considering, but he’s one of three or four players the Rossoneri are carefully considering to strengthen their defence. Amorim knows him very well, so we’ll see what happens.”

  1. Inacio looks v good. A lot of top clubs are after him but Sporting notoriously hard to negotiate with.

Would be quite a statement signing if we could acquire him this summer

  2. An excellent defender who knows how to play with the ball at his feet. It’s hard to believe that we can get to him because Cardinale would have to dig deep into his pocket again!

      1. I now see that Inacio is also left-footed, so in this case it would not make sense to keep Pavlovic anyways. I agree with you
