‘A peculiar situation at Milan’ – Director reveals how Inter signed Calhanoglu ‘in 48 hours’

Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio has revealed how the club were able to steal Hakan Calhanoglu from AC Milan within 48 hours.

Calhanoglu’s switch from Milan to Inter in 2021 is a fire that still burns on for many. Some supporters saw it as a betrayal, leaving for a city rival. The Nerazzurri added someone who became a key pillar under Simone Inzaghi, moving back to the regista role from his previous playmaker position.

After being runner-up to Inter in the Scudetto battle while at Milan in the season prior to joining the Nerazzurri, he had to watch the Rossoneri celebrate the title in 2021-22. However, he has since tasted league glory in 2023-24, earning the famous second star which came in a derby win.

Ausilio gave an interview to the Colpi da Maestro podcast, broadcast on YouTube. Among his various stories, the Nerazzurri director touched on the subject of Calhanogu, with his comments relayed by MilanPress.

“The Calhanoglu deal was certainly one of the best, considering the quality of the players. He was in a peculiar situation at Milan, but he came to Inter to remedy a dire situation: Eriksen’s. In 48 hours, we took advantage of the situation. Now we’re enjoying having him.”
