Opta: Inter vs. Milan is Lautaro vs. Giroud – their encouraging derby records

By Oliver Fisher -

Inter and AC Milan will contest the derby at San Siro tonight with a lot on the line for both teams, and both head coaches looking towards their main strikers.

The game will be heavily influenced by some key battles that will take place across the pitch, but it will of course be the goal scorers who hope to put their stamp on the game, just as they have before in the case of Lautaro Martínez and Olivier Giroud.

Starting with the Argentina, he has scored six goals against Milan in all competitions. Only against Cagliari (eight) has he scored more since he joined Inter, and if he were to score in this game, he will become the second-highest foreign scorer in the history of this fixture for Inter, only behind Stefano Nyers (11).

Then there is Giroud, who has found the net in both his first two Serie A derbies against Inter, scoring three times in total including the match-winning brace one year ago today. No Milan player has scored in their first three games against Inter in the competition in the three-points-per-win era (since 1994/95).
