International duty, renewals and sirens from abroad: Latest news on the AC Milan Women

By Steph Insixiengmay -

With the season now over, some members of AC Milan Women are getting some well-earned rest after securing a Champions League spot, while others are in international duty.

Below, we had some news and tidbits about the Rossonere including those in action for their country…

National teams

A few AC Milan players have been summoned to their national teams for upcoming friendlies. Both Valentina Giacinti and Valentina Bergamaschi were initially summoned for Italy’s upcoming friendlies with The Netherlands. Bergamaschi, however, was sent home for unknown reasons.

As it stands, only Valentina Giacinti will the only player for Milan in the Italy squad. Italy will play The Netherlands on June 10th, at 17:30 CET, and Austria on June 14th at 16:30 CET.

Christy Grimshaw also got her first call-up for Scotland. The midfielder’s performances at Milan caught the attention of Scotland coach Stuart McLaren, and she was called up for the team. Scotland will play a friendly against Northern Ireland on Thursday, June 10th at 7 pm GMT and against Wales on June 15th at 7:15 GMT.

Yui Hasegawa has also been summoned by Japan to participate in their upcoming friendlies. The team will take on Ukraine in a friendly on June 10th. The midfielder will also stay with the Nadeshiko throughout the summer as they prepare to participate in the Tokyo Olympics as the host nation.

Hasegawa has said that the team’s stated goal is to win the gold medal in the tournament. You can read more about it in our exclusive interview with her.

Renewals

As was noted before, midfielders Vero Boquete and Christy Grimshaw have already signed renewals with the team. Goalkeeper Mária Korenčiová is said to be remaining with the team as well.

Although Laura Giuliani is almost most certain to join Milan, Korenčiová would like to stay on the team as well. The goalkeeper is said to be enjoying her time in Italy and is not quite ready to leave yet.

If she stays and Giuliani joins, then Milan will officially have two of the best goalkeepers in Italy.

Interest from abroad

The previously mentioned Hasegawa is also said to be attracting interest from abroad. The Japanese international is apparently attracting interest from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, and PSG.

To date, she is one of few Milan players that has not yet signed a renewal with the team. If the team loses her, then they’ll have a huge gap to fill, as Yui was one of the team’s best players last season.

The Rossonere, however, are working hard to fortify the squad. The team is also said to be interested in forward Stine Larsen. The Danish international is a versatile player who has played at the highest level and would boost the overall quality of the team, should they sign her.

Milan are currently on a summer break. They’ll learn who their opponents for the Uefa Women’s Champions League will be on July 2nd. They’ll then reconvene for training on July 5th in preparation for their first knockout game of the tournament, which will take place on August 18th.

More updates about the team will be posted within the upcoming days.

UPDATE: Caroline Rask has announced on her Instagram that she will be leaving the club.
