Investment, streamlining and targets: What AC Milan must do to retain the Serie A title

By Oliver Fisher -

The new Italian Serie A season presents a massive challenge for AC Milan as the Rossoneri are defending their first Serie A title in a decade.

Before winning the title on the final day of last season, Milan faced tough competition. The current 2022-23 season holds prospects for much bigger competition in Serie A.

Both Milan teams led the race to the Serie A title last season. Although it is still early, more teams have strengthened adequately and are pushing for the title.

Mourinho’s Roma side has done good business in the transfer market. Inter Milan, Napoli, Juventus, and Lazio also have their sights set on the title.

Most of the already released betting tips on reliable platforms such as, have pointed to the fact that the Red and Black Army’s title defense will not be a stroll in the park.

No matter how tough it seems, it is AC Milan’s title to lose. If Milan do not shore up in the right places, other teams will not hesitate to bank on their lapses.

How Milan can strengthen

The takeover of AC Milan by Gerry Cardinale suggests that there will be changes in the structure of the club. However, these changes seem to only occur on the ownership level.

All of the investors that teamed up with Cardinale to buy AC Milan from Elliot Fund have decided to maintain the footballing structure within the club. They want Paolo Maldini to continue to lead the project.

Given that no imminent changes are expected on the footballing side, Paolo Maldini and his team can help AC Milan’s Scudetto defense in the following ways…

Retain top talents

There have been transfer rumors about some of AC Milan’s best players. The club already lost Franck Kessie, Alessio Romagnoli, and Samu Castillejo on free transfers to Barcelona, Lazio, and Valencia.

AC Milan cannot afford to lose important players like Rafael Leão and Sandro Tonali. These players are subjects of serious transfer interest from Premier League teams.

With new ownership onboard, AC Milan must make a bold statement that will correct the impression that it is a selling club.

Continue investment in youth

The average age of the AC Milan squad has dropped significantly within the last two seasons. Most of the older players in the squad are high performers, but the club cannot rely on them alone for the long season ahead.

The new owners must utilise the unique opportunity to invest in young talents from the academy. Investing in young players seems to be yielding success for Milan.

Release deadweight players

Right now, Milan have one of the leanest squads in the Italian Serie A. The club’s financial strength does not also match the strength of some of its competitors.

Therefore, players who are not productive will only do the team more harm than good. There is no need to keep players who are inefficient to the team.

Formulate plans and achieve targets

With the new owners, AC Milan must immediately develop an effective strategy that will align the business and sporting side of the club.

When an effective plan is in motion, it becomes easy for Stefano Pioli’s side to pursue the strategy without derailing due to the high level of competition they will face.

A lot of work needs to be done on and off the pitch for AC Milan to retain their Serie A title. It will never be easy, even though nobody could have envisaged that their rivals would strengthen as they have done in the transfer window.

Milan appears to have the upper hand as their squad has played together longer than these other sides. However, the club must ensure its plans for the season are solid if it wants to retain its Serie A title.
