The meeting in Rome between Giorgio Furlani and Igli Tare was a positive one, but the matter of AC Milan’s new sporting director is far from closed.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Furlani had already had telephone discussions with Tare, but in the capital there was the first proper face-to-face meeting. It lasted about four hours and the project to revive the Rossoneri was discussed at length.
For the former Lazio director, it was not his first meeting with Milan. His name had already been endorsed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a summit in London almost two months ago, together with the owner of RedBird Capital Gerry Cardinale.
However, the Rome meeting with Furlani was not decisive. There were no handshakes and it is possible that other talks will take place in the coming days to try to resolve some doubts. Furlani also does not want to rush things because he is aware how big a decision this is.
This is why all aspects will have to be evaluated, from the financial one to responsibilities, from the ideas for the summer mercato to the chosen coach. Tare is one of the main candidates, especially because he is free to sign immediately, but the fact he hasn’t means evaluations are ongoing.
Work to do
The next sporting director of Milan will also have to be present at Milanello, in the relationship with players and coach, acting as a glue between the team and the club, a bit of what the Diavolo have lacked in these two years after the farewell of the Maldini-Massara duo.
It is at the training complex that internal problems are resolved and this year has shown that not even the presence of Ibrahimovic has been useful in containing some moments of crisis. The future director will have to know how to adapt to the management structure, where decisions are shared.
A ‘traditional’ sporting director will arrive, as admitted by Furlani himself in a recent interview, but he will not be all-powerful. Thus, he will still have to act in collaboration with the CEO, Ibrahimovic, Geoffrey Moncada and of course the owners.

Alternatives to Tare
Tare is certainly among the names examined by Furlani, but he is not the only one. It is likely that the CEO will continue the search with further interviews with other candidates.
In recent days, Milan have also thought about Giovanni Sartori, but Bologna do not want to lose him, and he recently renewed until 2027. Some enquiries have been made for Giovanni Manna from Napoli, but the response was negative.
Then the name of Tony D’Amico from Atalanta could come back into fashion, also under contract until 2027 but among Furlani’s favourites. There are also intermediaries who are proposing names from abroad, including Devin Ozek from Germany, formerly of Bayer Leverkusen.
The issue won’t be fixed, beacause in addition to hiring a true and decent sporting director, Ibra & Moncada had to be relieved from any technical involvement.
“Devin Ozek from Germany, formerly of Bayer Leverkusen.”
Turkish Moncada.
Seeking for another a “YES” sir sporting Director. What Maldini has refused to be.
The myth continues to take all sorts of shapes and turns, doesn’t it? Did he walk on water too? Maldini was fired, be didn’t quit. Also, ALL directors of sport operate within the parameters set by their ownership, whatever those limits are. City’s DS doesn’t sign Haaland without ownership’s approval or Madrid’s DS doesn’t sign Mbappe without ownership’s approval, just as much as Venezia’s DS doesn’t sign any player without ownership’s approval, etc.
When a sporting director have a vision and and want to build a team that might be capable of winning but the management careless about winning but profit . they will surely come to disagreement with him and sack him.
They already have a traditional and italian sporting Director in Maldini that know in and out of Milan and also breathe Red and Black and a foreign Technical Director is Massara.
You throw them away and went back to square one within 2yrs.
Everything Maldini wanted to do for Milan is what the management agreed to do now but on a lower budget.
