Italian newspaper slams Serie A for ‘hypocrisy’ as only option is to vaccinate players

By Isak Möller -

As is usually the case these days when the international break comes around, there is concern among the clubs. The reason, of course, is that there is a higher COVID risk for the players, as we saw this time out.

There has been a COVID outbreak in the Italian national team, with several staff members and Leonardo Bonucci testing positive. Fortunately for Milan, Gigio Donnarumma tested negative even per a molecular test.

However, the outbreak has highlighted the dangers of an international break in these times, and several other national teams have also had some cases. Sassuolo even decided to exclude their players who were part of Italy’s squad from their game tomorrow.

Today’s edition of Il Giornale (via MilanNews) certainly didn’t hold back on their criticism against the league, not just because of the COVID guidelines in place, but also because it hasn’t worked with the intervention of local health units.

“Without vaccines, it’s Russian roulette in every match”, they wrote, and continued to say that the hypocrisy needs to end and the only solution is to vaccinate the players. Either you do that or you stop, since the COVID rules are now a “waste paper”.
