Jacobelli offers verdict on Milan’s Giroud replacement: “Could be an excellent buy”

By Ben Dixon -

It cannot be stressed enough how important the upcoming mercato is for AC Milan. A first under Paulo Fonseca and a first without several key players returning, and Xavier Jacobelli has offered some advice to the club about the mercato.

Over the past five seasons, Stefano Pioli has rebuilt Milan’s squad in several ways, and even last season, he remodelled the team in several ways. Of course, though, this is football, and changes are needed to be successful.

However, last season cannot be filed as a success, it was far from it, which probably raised the level of scrutiny on his position. Under Fonseca, success must arrive immediately, and the work to achieve that has been in the works for several months now.

Jacobelli gave his opinion on Milan’s chase of Alvaro Morata and Youssouf Fofana when speaking to TMW Radio, and his words have been relayed by Milan News.

What a coup would the purchase of Morata be for AC Milan?
“Morata is certainly not a central striker, as Giroud was. The Spaniard is a great striker, who plays for the team and has scored twenty-one goals this year with Atletico Madrid. In my opinion, then we also need a real centre forward. Considering the cost of the contract and the wage, however, Morata could be an excellent buy.

Fonseca seems very determined, but the fans are divided.
‘I am pragmatic, I wait until the end of the market operations for a definitive judgement. Pioli’s legacy is indicative, thanks to a young and growing team. I understand the perplexity of the square for a lack of big names on the market, but we are still on 10 July.”

Could Fofana finally become the replacement for the never-replaced Kessie?
“Yes, Fofana would grant solidity and dynamism, while also waiting for the future of Bennacer, on whom there are Saudi sirens. However, the economic conditions must always be considered. Milan has returned to a surplus in the balance sheet, they don’t want to take steps backwards from this point of view.”
