Jacobone: Milan set to reward centre-back with multi-year extension

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are set to reward Matteo Gabbia for his contributions since returning from loan by renewing his contract, according to a report.

The decision was taken last summer to loan Gabbia out to Villarreal in order to get him more playing time, but he was recalled in January because of the injury crisis that affected the centre-back department.

He was thrust into the starting line-up almost instantly and the response was very positive. The Milan Primavera graduate showed himself to be a reliable option for the rearguard, and he would actually go on to make 18 Serie A appearances in the second half of the season.

According to journalist Alessandro Jacobone on X, Milan and Gabbia are moving towards agreeing an extension of his contract which will run for another four years, therefore until the summer of 2028.

No further details are mentioned such as when the signature can be expected or what will happen regarding the defender’s salary, but it is certainly a well-earned deal for someone who has earned the management’s faith.

His current contract is set to expire in June 2026 so there is no huge urgency regarding the deadline at present, though the directors have showed more of a desire to act ahead of time compared to their predecessors.

        1. It’s not sad at all. Matteo is a good player but he isn’t even on the level of our country’s other center backs, not even close, so yes, he will be a Luigi Sala because he is the same as Luigi Sala. One level below.

          1. Everyone is one lvl below unit your whole backline is in infirmary. Then you play the one lvl below player and what do you know… he’s actually good…

And yeah he could easily play for Italy. He’s no worse than mancini or gatti

  1. I’ve wished they focused on the development of this guy. I’m not saying he could be our Bonnuci or Chiellini, but also, why not? If he’d receive enough support, I don’t see a reason why he wouldn’t be able to become a clear starter for at least the remainder of the decade.

    Forza Gabbia!

    1. Bonucci!

      LOL

A terrible defender with a big trophy cabinet because he played 200 plus games alongside Chiellini.

      I’d take that.

    2. Guys, easy on me! It wasn’t a 1-to-1 comparison, rather an ideological one. A long-time-serving modern ”oldschool” defender. He was solid in his hayday, can’t just deny that?

    1. They want to make quick buck on him because otherwise agents are not happy. More sell and resell to make more comissions. I feel sorry for Simic — our best young defender in generation!

  2. People are talking like Gabbia is a hidden gem, we’ve had a center back like him before, Luigi Sala, hard working, not physically and technically gifted, his name was Luigi Sala, Gabbia is the new Luigi Sala. Even better comparison would be former Udinese captain Valerio Bertotto.

  3. The disrespect gabbia gets is crazy. He’s good technically, defensively he has proper iq, he’s tall, wins areal duels and is unlucky not to have a few more goals. He’s shown to be our best defender every time he gets more than 30 sec of game time. He deserves his spot and pay increase and as far as itlay goes, he’s been overlooked massively. They are taking gatti who has done what? Gabbia since Jan has been a top 5 cb only behind inters players.

  4. There’s no point offering him a contract and then signing new CBs as he’ll be denied games.

We need our CBs to play 40 plus games together next season if we’re to stand a chance.

If we have too many we’ll rotate too much.

For some unknown reason Gabbia doesn’t even seem to be allowed to finish games and is constantly subbed off!

  5. Gabbia was our best CB when he returned from loan. Tomori was the best before his injury. Imo they should be the centre back pairing. They seem to work well as each one’s weaknesses are covered by the other

    1. This.
We should focus our budget on a quality striker and a quality CDM rather than adding CBs and RBs and ending up with average players in each position.

    1. Not true, he’s one of the reasons the national team performed so well, he’s a modern Libero, his long balls were vital, he’s the best ball playing defender we’ve had since Dino Baggio and Angelo Palombo made the switch to center back. We’ve always had solid CB’s but not many ball playing center backs since the days of Baresi.
