Jacobone: Milan set to reward centre-back with multi-year extension

AC Milan are set to reward Matteo Gabbia for his contributions since returning from loan by renewing his contract, according to a report.

The decision was taken last summer to loan Gabbia out to Villarreal in order to get him more playing time, but he was recalled in January because of the injury crisis that affected the centre-back department.

He was thrust into the starting line-up almost instantly and the response was very positive. The Milan Primavera graduate showed himself to be a reliable option for the rearguard, and he would actually go on to make 18 Serie A appearances in the second half of the season.

According to journalist Alessandro Jacobone on X, Milan and Gabbia are moving towards agreeing an extension of his contract which will run for another four years, therefore until the summer of 2028.

No further details are mentioned such as when the signature can be expected or what will happen regarding the defender’s salary, but it is certainly a well-earned deal for someone who has earned the management’s faith.

His current contract is set to expire in June 2026 so there is no huge urgency regarding the deadline at present, though the directors have showed more of a desire to act ahead of time compared to their predecessors.
