Jacobone: Milan watch on as Feyenoord midfielder prepares for summer exit

AC Milan are looking to reinforce the defensive phase of their game ahead of next season and one of the priorities is to sign a defensive midfielder. Several players have been mentioned and an old target could be the one, a journalist claims.

Under the management of Stefano Pioli, Milan conceded 49 goals in the league in the 2023-24 season, which is far too many for a top team like the Rossoneri. Therefore, changes are needed in the summer and Gazzetta dello Sport highlighters this morning that a defensive midfielder is crucial.

According to Alessandro Jacobone, an Italian team is keeping a close eye on Feyenoord midfielder Mats Wieffer, who looks set to leave the Dutch side this summer. Milan were very interested 12 months ago and it seems likely that they are the club in question, even if there has been no direct confirmation yet.

At the age of 24, Wieffer fits the profile well and would certainly be a good signing for the Rossoneri. However, he has a contract until 2027 and the price tag could thus be significant, which is something that Geoffrey Moncada and co would like to avoid.

Most of the money will be spent on a striker this summer, as well as a few other positions, with around €20m left to sign a defensive midfielder.

  1. He would be a great signing, he will most likely partner with De Jong and Reijnders in midfield in the coming Euro’s. Solid midfielder. Get him asap

    1. Reijnders is an attacking midfielder and should be used as such. The double pivot needs to have a good DM and a good ball distributer.

It would be interesting to try RLC in the double pivot and utilize is size and speed there.

      1. RLC was horrible as double pivot costing us lot of goals.

Reijnders as a cam, bad shooting, poor decision making, no

        1. RLC was next to no natural DM and isn’t a DM himself. But needs to be converted to one because he doesn’t cut it as AM.

Reijnders does need to improve his shooting 100%. He can only improve in that position and compete with Puli. They are the best we can do in that spot with the players we have.

    2. No double pivot position for Reijnders, 433 with that midfield.

      Reijnders-Wieffer-RLC

But Wieffer’s price tag will be a problem so I think he’s out of reach for us.

  2. He’d be my pick for DM but he’s probably too expensive.

Netherlands will have quite impressive midfield for Euros with De Jong, Veerman, Reijnders and Wieffer.

  3. Good player and prob the cheapest DM on the market right now that can be good enough for a top team. He might be too white for Moncada and the americans tho so prob pass.

  4. We need a player like that, but I would not mind a more dynamic player. I would get Gyurassi and spend 60m to get Ederson or Douglas Luiz. A player like Ederson would solve a lot of the defensive problems Milan has. If you get a Wieffer you need to be careful not to leave him with a lot of ground to cover.

  5. What a lot of empty talk!!!! We want every single player but do not seem ro have enough money to buy even his shoe laces …..

  6. I think he would be a good addition. Hopefully we try to get him before others get into a bidding war. He’s been an international with the netherlands and had more play time than reijnders last international break

    1. Juve nor Inter will be doing big signings, especially after Inter defaulted on a loan. Neither are in the financial position.

  7. Yes. Yes and yes. There is no doubt in my mind this is the player we should sign. Wieffer will allow Reijnders to be more attack minded. He’s not so young we need to develop him. He has experience.

  8. Yes, my dream central midfielder. He will be a great addition to our team, a future leader. I really hope we will take him. He deserves every penny, best defensive midfielder we can buy at this moment .

  9. “Under the management of Stefano Pioli, Milan conceded 49 goals in the league in the 2023-24 season,” lol I like how they pinned that whole thing on Pioli as if the recruitment strategy that included Moncada and Furlani aren’t also to blame. You guys tend to ascribe things to push certain narratives. Under the management of Pioli we also had the top 3 defence twice in the past 4 years too, one of them being the best defence. How about that? And it’s obvious it was in the former years not the latter when we’ve been systematically reducing our defensive skills in midfield. We could also write that last summer’s transfer campaign resulted in the worst defensive record in the last 5 years (and probably further back). But nah, it’s convenient to push that Pioli is bad to make way for the new coach and to set up the “this is better” narrative. Give the man a proper midfield and he will produce. It’s the same coaching after all, it was the quality of players that changed.
Plus in this season, the one solitary figure who did some sort of defending in midfield and whose name we cannot mention was effectively pushed out of the club..further conceding even more goals as the season progressed. Smh. How about that for context. We’ve been buying too many attack minded players creating a weak midfield.
