CM: Jeers to cheers – Fonseca continues to ‘be himself’ with Zlatan’s blessing

AC Milan and finally up and running in the Champions League after last night’s 3-1 win over Club Brugge, and Paulo Fonseca’s moved are continuing to draw praise.

As Calciomercato.com recall, it was far from an easy night for Milan as the away side drew several saves from Mike Maignan in the first half, even equalising through Kyriani Sabbe after they had gone down to ten men.

From that moment on, Fonseca won the night with his surprising choices. There were jeers from a good part of the stadium when Rafael Leao and Ruben Loftus-Cheek came off, with Noah Okafor and Samuel Chukwueze came on.

The result? Two assists came from the substitutes, including one within seconds of being introduced for the Swiss winger. Without VAR intervention we would be here talking about the genius of putting Camarda in at the right time for a record-breaking goal in the Champions League.

Fonseca is slowly winning over everyone, even the most strenuous detractors. The Portuguese coach has been transparent and clear in the media about what he expects from his team, bold in his choices, and he does so with the backing of the management.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic spoke before the game and said: “Fonseca must be himself, he is the coach. I am seeing the team improving a lot. There is more balance, more stability is needed but it is a job they are looking for and they are doing everything to have it. We have paid dearly for the mistakes we made.”

Fonseca is putting his stamp on this Milan, but there is a long way to go to get to a level where they can become competitive, especially for the Scudetto, which is the target that was declared by the former Lille coach. However, compared to the chaos generated by the defeat in Florence, the reaction is already significant.
