Journalist: Buy-out option worth €7m as Milan youngster joins Alaves on loan

By Isak Möller -

Luka Romero is now just one step away from completing his move to Alaves, having missed AC Milan’s friendly against Rapid Wien on Saturday evening. Reports from Spain have now confirmed the details of the deal, as anticipated by Italian media.

Romero joined Milan on a free transfer from Lazio last summer and while he impressed in pre-season, he didn’t get much playing time after. In January, therefore, he joined Almeria on a dry loan and impressed with three well-taken goals.

As such, Milan didn’t have any issues finding him a new club this summer and Alaves wanted him the most, also convincing the 19-year-old. According to the Spanish journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, it’s a loan with an option to buy set at €7m.

This amount was also reported by Calciomercato.com a few days back, so Milan fans can rest knowing that it most likely isn’t any lower than that. Should Alaves trigger the clause at the end of the season, then the Rossoneri will register a very good capital gain.

Looking at Milan’s team now, and especially with the potential addition of Lazar Samardzic, it would have been very difficult for Romero to get playing time.

    1. when players below the age of 21 moves to another club on a free transfer there will be some development fee involved to the former club. Its nothing huge but in the case of kalulu I believe we ended up paying Lyon something in between 500k and a mil so its not entirely pure capital gain but financially speaking a great turnback neverthelss.
When that is said I’m not to fond of letting go of both Romero and Simic and even less so at the fees mentioned in both deals.

      1. Only if they signed when their contract expire from their parent club which nurture them from youth academy. If they already sign a professional contract with different club like in Romero’s case, it works like the regular transfer. He is not Milan homegrown player

        1. all players leaving below that age will send some compensation towards their previous clubs. Its development money. Its actually a pretty good thing in my book that helps covering the smaller clubs work

          1. Yeah it is. Milan paid Lazio that money, but not his next club to Milan. All player usually has pro contract (instead of youth contract) by the age of 18 if they are good enough to their club. He is 19 years old and has already pro contract, so they must pay what Milan asks if they want to sign him.

        2. And no regardless if a player comes up through ranks of a club a leaves on a free transfer there will be some compensation regardless

  1. hope the management work in the kind of deal Real Madrid works. Buy back clauses on all of their talent. He has a lot of potential tbh but needs consistency to develop.

  2. I wish him the best of luck for the future. I really feel bad for him. When he signed, probably he would have a chance to be THAT guy who breaks the curse of our RW. Maybe not immediately, but at least as a sub, getting valuable minutes here and there. Turns out we bought Puli and Chuk at the very same window. I suspect he would’ve been pissed at his agent, or at the very least, regret the move. He was labelled as the “next Messi” but his career really have hit speed bump since.

  3. Seriously we need to place buy back option Or Clauses that gives us advantage over them on all our young talents…. Madrid did that with Ceballos, Diaz, Olmo and many others…. Just like Bayern did with Zirkeze too…. Not lose our talents for little fees and lose what they can offer the team in the future.

    1. I agree with your assessments but if you are referring to Dani Olmo then he never played in Real Madrid as he left Barcelona on a free transfer to join Dinamo Zagreb as a teenager.

  4. They should have persuade him and add him to the futuro with some little mins with the first team in cup matches when the big stars will need rest

  5. So was he bought strictly to make a capital gain or was be brought because the scouting analysis determined he suited our needs? Either way sucks btw. The only thing that doesn’t is the money we’ll get.

    1. Yes just like ACM buy hauge in the past . Pure for capital gain because at that time we have leao & rebic as LW. ACM got capital gain if alavez activate buy option

    2. And yet you guys complained when Kessi, Dollaruma walk out with 0 transfee fee. This is a good deal, Milan don’t need him and made the right investment. Stop being sentiment. It’s like Chelsea in Abramovich’s era. Buy players, loaned them out until they worth more and sell them with profits.

      1. Who are u referring to? I didn’t complain that Kessie and Dollar left on a free. Context is missing for both. We knew how those stories went with their agent’s demands but for Kessie I was ok with not selling as he was critical in bringing us the Scudetto and subsequently put us in a nice pot for the UCL which eventually ended up making us money….which was spent in last year’s summer spree. So I hv no clue what you’re referring to or what those incidents have to do with my comment. Those were established players. Romero was a totally new player.
I’m simply asking if this was scouting work for function with the team or a pick up for profit. It’s odd to me because it seems it was just a profit motive yet at 19 is attracting interest from a club in top division which our other youngsters don’t seem to attract. It also begs the question which of our other signings are strictly in the hope that they improve to simply sell on for profit and which are for building the team to compete (if that’s a motive at all). That’s what im getting at.

        1. Also I just want to be clear. This sets a precedent for the future. If we’re simply in the business of just selling youth players for profit and there’s no clear path to the first team, then our ability to attract top talent is also hindered. ie why choose us over a team which have a proper vision/ plan for youths. They would go elsewhere. So this approach only works in the short term for a quick buck.

  6. Signing a player for nothing and selling him for money, compared to losing your best players for nothing.
    Positive changes at Milan.
