Journalist profiles Barcelona man Firpo and provides update on Milan’s pursuit

By Isak Möller -

Milan are looking for a left-back on the market and it seems they have landed on Junior Firpo as their first choice. It’s a necessary signing as we can expect Theo Hernandez to play every single game next season.

Diogo Dalot was the Rossoneri’s deputy left-back this past season but he has now returned to Man Utd. And if Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara can secure his return, then he will be used in his natural position on the right.

Therefore, Milan are serious in their pursuit of Firpo, who made just six appearances for Barcelona in La Liga this past season. Of course, that isn’t enough playing time and the defender is now looking to move on in his career.

Speaking to MilanNews in an exclusive interview, SPORT journalist Toni Juanmarti provided an update on the negotiations between Barcelona and Milan. He also shared his thoughts on Firpo and the qualities he has.

Milan are interested in Junior Firpo. What kind of player is he?

“Junior Firpo is the kind of player who is much better offensively than defensively. His best games in Betis have been as a wide man in a 3-5-2. He had the opportunity to run in behind and get in deep. This is one of his best qualities. In fact, when he played with Barcelona in the back four, he suffered a lot as he plays better when he has no defensive duties.”

Would Firpo be willing to move to Milan?

“The player likes Milan and he’s interested in the Rossoneri. Milan, however, would like to loan the player and evaluate the redemption at the end of the season. Firpo still wants to go to Milan, but the Rossoneri’s offer doesn’t satisfy Barcelona.”

At what point are we in the negotiations with Barcelona?

“The negotiation is currently blocked and the agreement between the two teams isn’t there yet: Barca want the transfer to be permanent and therefore, wants to put in a minimum number of games that Firpo will have to play to make the option an obligation.”

“Currently, the negotiation is like a game of chess: whoever gets tired first between Barcelona and Firpo, wins. My opinion is that in the end, Barcelona will be let him go and next year Firpo will play in Milan.”

  1. We need a back up to Theo but not another player who can’t defend lol….Theo has trouble in that regard already…and for 15M for a backup? Forget it. We can final a quality back up for less (Hysja formerly of Napoli?)

    1. Yep. Too expensive as a backup. Why not change to 3-5-2 for games where Theo isn’t available. There’s plenty of options for the left side in that formation.

    2. Can’t you see that modern day fullbacks must perform attacking duties for the team to succeed?
We had Ricardo Rodriguez, a left back who can defend but clueless in attack, we all know how the team suffered.
      Attacking fullbacks, way to go.
