Jovic confirms Milan have been chasing him for a while: “Maldini contacted me”

By Oliver Fisher -

Luka Jovic has revealed that AC Milan tried to sign him three years ago before he eventually ended up joining during the last summer window.

The Serbian striker was the last of 10 summer signings made by the Rossoneri management, joining from Fiorentina on an initial one-year deal with an option to extend his stay further, and he arrives with a point to prove after difficult recent seasons.

Jovic spoke during his unveiling press conference which finally went ahead today after being delayed from last week (read in full here) and he was asked if it was true that Milan tried to sign him before.

“Yes, there were contacts years ago. Maldini contacted me three years ago when I was at Real Madrid, but things didn’t work out. But now I’m here.”

Revealing some background more specifically on the summer mercato just gone, Jovic admitted that the Rossoneri reached out to him at the beginning of the window and then he was getting ready to stay at Fiorentina before the call came again.

“It is a great honour and a great satisfaction to play for such a great club, I will do everything to achieve the objectives. There were contacts at the beginning of the summer, then the situation developed differently.

“My wish was to come here. I was waiting Milan, I rejected all the other offers. I was ready to stay at Fiorentina too, but I waited for Milan to arrive. I’m very happy.”
