Kalulu and Maignan suffer problems during Verona win – the latest

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan scored three goals and got all three points against Hellas Verona this afternoon, but the victory wasn’t without a couple of scares.

When Pierre Kalulu was replaced by Matteo Gabbia at half-time, the initial assumption was that it was due to the fact he had gone 140 days since his last start and thus perhaps didn’t have any more than 45 minutes in his legs.

As a reminder, Kalulu suffered a ruptured tendon in the game against Napoli four months ago and this was the first time he had been named in the starting line-up since that game.

According to DAZN (via MilanNews), however, Kalulu was unable to continue due to a slight knee sprain suffered during the first half, and that is why Gabbia came on in his place.

The home is that it is only a slight issue given that he was able to play until the end of the half, but further information will emerge in the coming hours.

Meanwhile, Gabbia had to take goal kicks towards the end of the game as Mike Maignan almost did the splits when making a save. It looked like he has tweaked his groin but could not come off due to the fact all the subs had been used.

There were doubts about whether Maignan would start at all given he suffered a bruised knee on Thursday night, and we are also awaiting further info on him too.

  1. Yea I thought Kalulu came off because of injury.

Mike channeled his inner MC Hammer with the splits on the last save. Probably pulled something. That looked uncomfortable.

    1. He touched his thigh and made a gesture to the player next to him, if he can stay away from France’s international games, he may be fine and well rested for Fiorentina, he usually picks his major injuries during the international break anyways

    1. In the case of Kalulu it was a collision and his knee was bent laterally.

Mike bent himself in a way he is not apparently able to comfortably a d did so very suddenly/dynamically.

Medical staff still needs to answer.quratikns about our run of injuries in the first half of the season, but there isn’t much they could have done here.

I hope Kalulu is back soon. I think he and Tomori together.are a helluva combo.

What was truly great was to see the quality of Gabbia come on to cover for him.

      Get well soon Mr. K!!

  2. should mike have played after what happened in Prague, even Kalulu in the Slavia Prague game was clearly playing in difficulty, Pioli should have started with Kjaer or Thaiw, he lacks vision,Giroud is clearly burnt, but he insists on using him, he is tired and needs rest, why is Jovic not playing…….?

  3. I don’t know why we risk Maignan this game. Sportiello could, and should have played given Maignan got muscle problem last match…

Nowadays can’t watch any good Mike saves without injury scare

    1. Yeah why is it any physical exertion results in injury for Mike?
I know people think we can sell him for a fortune but any club that does basic research will realise he is made of glass

      1. But has he really been like this in Lille too? If not, the France national team’s medical staff & Milan’s medical staff can be checked

        1. Don’t mind the fools saying rubbish without proper research.

Mike was never this prone to injuries at Lille, he became prone to injuries when he started playing for Milan same with many other players in this current Milan team.

Instead of these foolish fans to point finger at the medical and fitness team they are blaming the players.

          Clowns 🤡

  4. Well you can’t always blame someone. Some things are bound to happen. Mike is hell of a fighter, but he has issues with his knees. That’s why everyone got scared mid-week. However, obviously it was minor issue and didn’t have consequences on yesterday’s game. If he got an injury vs Verona it had nothing to do with the bruising on Thursday.

It’s foolish to consider keeping him on the bench for the sake of ‘I have a feeling he might get injured’. He is a world class professional player. He wants to play every second, we want him to play every possible second if there are no health hazards (there weren’t).

    1. And btw, when I saw his discomfort after the split I had 2 thoughts:
      – hope he is ok and can play
      – if he can’t, does Giroud have a green shirt with his name prepped by the team this time?!
