Milos Kerkez

Kerkez reveals importance of Maldini’s phone call: “I was sure of going to Milan”

On the final day of the January transfer window, Milan announced the signing of Milos Kerkez from Hungarian side ETO FC Gyor. The left-back, who is just 17-years-old, will play for the Primavera side initially.

In the last days of the mercato, there were many rumours about the Rossoneri potentially signing a left-back to fill that void in their squad. Theo Hernandez is the undisputed starter, but they don’t really have a natural replacement for him.

Diogo Dalot can play in that role, but he certainly prefers to play on the right if possible. And when it seemed Milan wouldn’t sign a player to fix the situation, they announced the signing of Kerkez. One to keep an eye on for the future, for sure.

As mentioned, he will start with the Primavera but inclusion in the first-team squad certainly isn’t impossible. In an interview with Nemzeti Sport Online, as cited by MilanNews, Kerkez spoke about the move and Paolo Maldini.

On Milan’s interest…

“It all happened quickly. My father and my agent, Daniel Kaposi, worked in the background to get me to the best possible place.”

On the decision to join the Rossoneri…

“After the first telephone conversation with Maldini and Massara, I was sure of going to Milan. From that moment on, it didn’t take a minute to decide which club I wanted to go to.”

On the decision to take him to Milan by private jet…

“As far as I know, it only happened because there was little time until the end of the market. This shows that they really wanted to buy me. Everything happened very quickly, I had little time to understand what was going on around me. Of course, it was a great experience to have me send a private plane.”

On Maldini…

“He is kind and direct. It was a great experience to meet such a personality. As a child, I watched many videos about him, and from my first experience, I can say that he still has the same brightness he had on the pitch. We talked a lot, he gave us a lot of advice. We’re talking about the best left-back in the world, and since I’m in that position too, every word is worth paying attention to.”

On the future…

“I’m aware of my abilities and will do my best to be in the first team as soon as possible.”

On the first team…

“At the moment, I can’t compete with the bigger players myself. But if I start training with them, I’m sure I will take a leap forward and solve the tasks that await me. I don’t feel pressure, nobody expects me. I have heard that in the long run, I’m seen as a deputy for Theo Hernandez. I know that the club has plans with me, and it’s no coincidence that I’m here.”

On Milanello…

“The conditions are excellent. The pitches are good, the environment is tidy. The restaurant is also very good. Everyone is available, I have no reason to complain.”

On Ibra…

“I have not yet met him, but I can’t wait.”
